THE GOOD PLACE Roundtable: Chillaxing

Episode 4.03 – Chillaxing

The team’s plans go awry when Chidi gets a bit too relaxed and loses interest in trying to reform the new residents. Eleanor hatches a plan to stress him out by making him promise to help Jason and then having Jason basically be himself and beg Chidi for help keeping the secret that he isn’t a monk. Meanwhile, Tahani has a plan to bring John around.

We’re going to divide our thoughts on this episode into three self-explanatory categories – The Good Place, The Medium Place, and The Bad Place, plus a final category for favorite quotes or overall thoughts.

The Good Place

Roz: Jason being Jason is always a plus.

Cay: I love the parallels of Jason basically being Jason and stressing the crap out of Chidi even though I feel really bad for Chidi! It was hilarious when he had to pretend to want the motorcycle. I have to wonder, how much was Jason purposely trying to drive Chidi nuts versus just being himself?

Christie: Tahani working with John was great, and I continue to love Jameela Jamil with all my heart. I know a number of people who remind me of John  (some of them are even named John), so I do feel like maybe she succeeded a little too easily, but still, hopefully it leads to better things.

Bad Place

Roz : Can we get back to Simone and her attitude? She’s at least hilarious when being herself, but Brent is annoying.

Christie: Is Brent REALLY on his way? Really?

Cay:  I find Tahani annoying, but the combo of Tahani plus John is just too much for me. And, clearly the masked person on the train car is from the Bad Place and that just can’t be good.

The Medium Place

Roz: I have feelings about Chidi and his anxiety, but they’re too complicated to suss out right now.

Christie: So, are we saying that if Chidi never met Eleanor originally, he would just enjoy himself in the original neighborhood?

Cay: The episode starts with introducing Simone and Chidi as soulmates, but then we don’t see her again for the rest of the episode. Meanwhile, Jason seems to be all but living at Chidi’s – I think some explanation is needed here for why we don’t see Simone again after their initial talk as you’d think they’d be together all the time.

And Christie, that is a very interesting thought! Hmmm…

Final Thoughts & Quotes We Loved

Roz: What is this Reaper doing?

Christie: I enjoyed this episode more than the first two. Hopefully episode 4 really blows the forking  lid of this shirt!

Michael talking to Eleanor about her treatment of Chidi: “I still don’t have a grip on the human emotional spectrum. You guys are often happy when you should be sad, and angry when you should be happy, and texting when you should be driving. Which is not an emotion, I know, but it’s insane.”

Cay: Why does Janet seem so stressed out? She never seemed stressed out in the first season when she would have had similar work to do in the neighborhood.

My favorite quotes: “I’ve never seen Chidi like that before! He was “chillaxing”, which is a word that I just invented that means “Chidi relaxing” – Michael

“No monk’s truest desire is a motorcycle with Pam Anderson on it” – Chidi

Cay's family thinks her obsession with pop culture is "not normal". Normal is boring!
