ONE CHICAGO: CHICAGO MED “We’re Lost in the Dark”, CHICAGO FIRE “A Real Shot in the Arm” and CHICAGO P.D. “Assets” Episode Round-Up
A power outage, an undercover operation, new faces – it was an eventful week in the ONE CHICAGO world. Join us as we look at the highlights from this week’s CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO P.D.!
New Faces
Last week we said farewell to a few ONE CHICAGO favorites; this week we met a few new faces. On MED, we had more insight into new guy Dr Marcel, who we briefly met last week. He’s quite the confident and carefree type, hey? We also took a peek at the latest crop of med students, one who Dr Choi took under his wing during the power outage. Med student Steve looked like he could become an ED protege, only for him to crack at the end of shift and realise that he couldn’t cope with running on that adrenaline every single day. On FIRE, Casey was still looking for someone to fill the vacancy on Truck 81 following the death of Otis. While out on a call, he was impressed by a candidate named Blake Gallo (played by SHADOWHUNTERS‘ Alberto Rosende) from a fellow firehouse but Boden thought the young rookie was too much of a daredevil and vetoed the suggestion. On P.D., we met a fresh faced police officer fresh out of the academy and already undercover – Vanessa Rojas (played by THE FOSTERS‘ Lizeth Chavez). The young cop was so skilled at her job that Intelligence didn’t even realize she was a cop at first! Voight was certainly impressed with her and she formed a connection with Atwater, so expect her to pop up again.
Howdy Partner
Whether it be new career opportunities or mentor relationships, we got to see some new partnerships in the ONE CHICAGO world this week. As mentioned above, Dr Choi took a shining to new med student Steve, who seemed pretty keen for any guidance the ED doctor could give him. The mentoring may have been short lived, but on the bright side a new mentor relationship seemed to also develop in this latest episode of MED – Dr Marcel and Dr Noah Sexton (who by the way seemed to have disappeared during the later half of last season, so it’s nice to see him back again.) Noah seemed to have a plan for how he wanted his career to work out, but watching Dr Marcel work, it looks like the young doctor was impressed and is reconsidering his plan.
On FIRE, we met new rookie firefighter Blake Gallo, after much persuasion from Casey (and a little from Severide), a reluctant Boden welcomed him to Firehouse 51. He seems like a good kid not looking to cause any trouble, just passionate about saving people. We appreciated that he addressed that he knew his new position was bittersweet and that he intends to honor Otis’ memory as the new member of Firehouse 51 and Truck 81. This now means Ritter is back on Engine 51 and the joy from him and Hermann about this was cute. We’re enjoying watching their mentor relationship. Foster was trying to be more accepting of her new partner Chad Collins (who by the way, I didn’t realise until this week is played by Austin Peck, who used to be on DAYS OF OUR LIVES! Perhaps because he’s so ridiculous on FIRE and was quite the serious leading man back in the day, it took me a while to connect these polar opposite roles.) In the end Collins’ obtuseness really frustrates Foster to the point where she snaps and fires him. FYI she actually doesn’t have the authority to do so and she realised this. Before Boden could reprimand her for doing so, she dragged Kidd with her to Fowlerton to convince Brett to come back. Unbeknownst to them, Brett had literally just made the decision to return to Chicago after realizing that life in uneventful Fowlerton is not for her. (She discovered that no calls at all during her first shift is apparently the norm for every shift.)
Outside of the firehouse, Molly’s North has already closed down but would Molly’s go too? Hermann was having trouble finding a partner and couldn’t afford to keep it on his own. (Molly’s was originally a three-split business between him, Otis and Gabby Dawson. Otis and Hermann then bought Dawson out when she left.) After initially turning him down, Mouch (along with Trudy) agreed to fill Otis’ spot as Hermann’s partner at Molly’s. It was really sweet to see how chuffed Hermann was with this news. We’re also looking forward to seeing him deal with Trudy’s input, ha ha!
On P.D., Ruzek was once again on the sidelines, but Voight has his back and used his persuasive powers on Superintendent Crawford (played by PRISON BREAK and I FEEL BAD‘s Paul Adelstein) to get Ruzek reinstated. There were a few pieces in play to make it happen, but at the end of the episode Voight turned up on Ruzek’s doorstep to give him back his badge and also let him know that the investigation had been dropped. Thank god!
Leap Into Action
There’s never a dull moment in the ONE CHICAGO world. On MED, a power outage happens at the hospital causing quite a few tricky scenarios. It’s Natalie’s first day back at work after her accident – Dr Lannik suggests she take a half day and light load, but that plan goes out the window when she ends up stuck in an elevator with a patient on their way to surgery when the power goes out! With help from FIRE‘s Casey, she ends up cutting the patient open in the elevator to perform a procedure that she’s never done before! Did we mention that she’s still feeling slight effects from her accident too? Dr Marcel pulls off a risky surgery with the lack of power. (They’re clearly setting him up to be the new Dr Rhodes right aka the impulsive doctor who pulls off risky procedures against everyone else’s better judgement, right?) Also a risk taker? Maggie goes straight to work after a round of chemo across town. (Sharon is still the only colleague who knows about her diagnosis.) At first she seems fine, but when the side effects do start to kick in, she is able to disguise it due to the case she’s working on and also the power outage.
On FIRE, Severide literally leaps into action off shift when he and Kidd are out on Boden’s boat and a guy falls off another boat and becomes trapped. With the amount of blood that was in the water, we’re surprised that the guy didn’t end up with a limb being taken off! Also on FIRE, when we first meet Gallo, he was leaping up balconies to save a guy dangling from a building. (He did mental calculations first though, so he is smarter than we thought.) While Foster and Kidd make an impulse decision to drive to Fowlerton and convince Brett to come back.
There was plenty of action on P.D. – Atwater was undercover trying to get some intel on a South Side drug syndicate. Halstead ends up becoming part of the undercover operation too with Voight, Burgess and Upton working surveillance. Things end up getting a little messy when a shoot off occurs and they realise that the “bartender”, who has been working at the bar where Atwater has been hanging out at as part of the stint, is actually an undercover cop too and that Intelligence isn’t the only one working the case.
Couples Chatter
On MED, the missing parts of Natalie’s memory still haven’t returned so she has no recollection of Phillip proposing (which never happened), her feelings for him or her moments with Will right before the accident. She thinks she was with Will because she was going to tell him that Phillip proposed. At first Will sort of accepts this explanation, but at the end of the episode he’s convinced that she wasn’t there to tell him about Phillip’s proposal. He thinks that there are still feelings there (he’s right), but she cuts him off and doesn’t believe him. In contrast, things are still going well with April and Ethan and at the end of the episode, after seeing how she continues to take the time to look out for everyone no matter what is going on, Ethan tells her that she’ll make a great mom and that he knows they decided to wait but he’s looking forward to that happening.
On FIRE, things are going well with Severide and Kidd. They try to take some time away from Molly’s to try other couple activities, like borrowing Boden’s boat… even if it did end in a bit of a disaster. Chloe and Cruz are still going strong and it was nice to see them together at Molly’s. Will they be moving in together now that Cruz has broken his lease? (Poor Cruz, him looking at the box of Otis’ belongings was rough!) Finally admitting that she was unhappy in Fowlerton, it looks like things are over between Brett and the Chaplain. No romance news on P.D., unless you count Platt appearing on FIRE and joining forces with husband Mouch to become Molly’s partners with Hermann.
Crossover Count
FIRE‘s Casey and Cap appeared on MED. While P.D‘s Platt popped up on FIRE.
The ONE CHICAGO line up airs Wednesday nights on NBC; beginning with the CHICAGO MED, followed by CHICAGO FIRE and concluding with CHICAGO P.D..
