Good Witch Recap: “The Grey-cation”

By  |

After a two-week break while the Hallmark Channel celebrated its annual Christmas in July, Good Witch was finally back with a new episode last night, focusing on:

“Martha and her husband, Tom, visit Grey House; Cassie and Sam realize that they still have some things to learn about one another; Donovan’s overbearing mother complicates his and Abigail’s relationship; Grace and Luke go on their first date.”

The main story was centered around the Tinsdales going on vacation; but that vacation was actually a stay-cation at Grey House hence the name of the episode, of course. Cassie was well aware that Martha and Tom were going to be the latest guests, but it was news to Sam. “Surprise,” Cassie said to him when the long-time married couple arrived.

That visit led to the two couples playing a game called “Spouse Trap.” Of course, since Martha and Tom have been married for MANY years, they know A LOT about each other easily winning the first round of the game; but it was during the playing of this game that Sam and Cassie learned some things about each other – little annoyances that seemed to worry them both a little. Sam wanted to be able to spend more time with Cassie while Cassie wanted Sam to be more communicative especially when he was stuck at the hospital.

Elsewhere in Grey House, Grace was prodding by cousin Abigail to finally ask Luke to go on a date. When Luke arrived at Grey House to pick her up, Sam comically acted like the “big bad dad,” giving Luke a hard time about treating Grace right on their date. Viewers may be wondering just what Luke has been up to – he has been talking to someone on the phone about getting research on the Merriwicks for someone [more on that shortly], but this is Middleton, after all, so there’s no need to worry. Their date was at the local rollerskating rink – where Grace got some lessons from her date on how to rollerskate since she never learned how. But it was during this date that Luke received yet another phone call from the faceless person seeking intel.

Another part of the story was one of Nick’s friends, Jake, visiting him at Grey House. Naturally, they play video games together – this time hockey – since Jake is a top athlete in that sport and is in Middleton for a big championship game. But tragedy struck during the game, as Nick learned Jake was injured after scoring the winning goal, breaking his knee in the process. Of course, this devastating injury was going to sideline his hopes of a college scholarship; and made him a bit prickly around his friend. Of course, Sam told Nick to be there for his friend, when Jake was ready for the support. And, to help the process along Sam arranged for a well-known professional hockey player to pay Jake a visit at the hospital to provide a much-needed pep talk.

In couples news, Donovan and Abigail seemed to be progressing in their relationship; that is until Momma Davenport, Dottie, arrived at Donovan’s mayoral office, finding them kissing. She immediately demanded they come to dinner that night, and naturally, dinner was ruined because of Dottie’s insistence that a Davenport and a Merriwick cannot be involved because of the legendary curse between the two families. Will Donovan and Abigail be taken down by the curse or will they forge a new path? At the end of the episode they paid a visit to the town’s Wishing Well, tossing a coin into its depths together. We shall see if that coin toss makes a difference for them or not.

As for Stephanie and her budding relationship with hospital chaplain Adam, it was derailed slightly by the unexpected visit by Adam’s former fiancé Melanie, who regretted walking away from him one week before their planned wedding, trying to get her betrothed back. But, in the end, Adam didn’t want her back, as he had feelings for Stephanie.

Oh, and that little mystery about Luke was FINALLY revealed. He told Grace his aunt was paying for him to go to that expensive school. And who is his aunt? None other than Donovan’s mother Dottie. She has been the faceless person he’s been talking to on the phone, as she wants to know how to break the curse between the Davenports and the Merriwicks; but to what end?
