9-1-1: Big Moments from “This Life We Choose” (Season Finale)

It’s been a big season on 9-1-1, so the show had a lot of ground to cover to wrap things up for the season. Fortunately for us, season 3 is already a go, so they could leave a few things open ended. Los Angeles is on edge after two bombings, with everyone waiting to see where the bomber will hit next. Bobby is still knee deep in wedding planning and waiting for news on his suspension. And Diaz…poor Diaz. He’s got a lot to figure out. Let’s look at some of the big moments from the season finale.

It’s the season finale, so there are definitely *SPOILERS* ahead.

Diaz’s Decision

Diaz is still grieving, and his family has definite opinions about what his next steps should be. Despite my predictions yesterday, it looks like Diaz is planning on sticking around for a while. This season we saw him reunited with his wife, and the two of them worked on re-building their relationship and his wife’s relationship with her son. I don’t think it was a particularly compelling development, which could be related to why they killed that story arc (literally). Diaz is grieving now, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see romance in store for him in season 3.

The Truck Bombing

We knew from previews that the truck was likely going to be bombed, but we didn’t know how or why. The past came back to haunt us in the form of an angry son. I had wondered why so much emphasis was given to that story, aside from it’s relation to Bobby’s recovery. We learned that the bombings are personal, and Athena and Bobby were targets, Bobby in particular. After a close call with Athena’s son, the bomber struck the fire crewing, causing a situation which drew Bobby out. I’m not sure whether that will play positively or negatively in his review, but it showed us again that Bobby is really the chief of this company. And, having the bystanders run in to help was very touching, particularly as it counters the narrative we have of the by-stander effect by showing us a community coming together to help someone in need.

Buck’s Recovery

Buck has a new girlfriend and a new apartment, but that seems to be eclipsed by the serious injury he received from being pinned under the fire truck. The bombing has also reminded his new girlfriend just how dangerous Buck’s career can be, and she’s not sure she’s ready for that. Coming in to season 3, I think we’ll see Buck recovering, but ultimately back on the crew. I mean, if Chimney can come back from having a bar through his head, Buck can come back from this, right? I guess we’ll see. But, can Cocoa Brown come back for a few more guest appearances while Buck recovers? Please?

And Baby Makes Four

I want nothing more than for Hen’s family to get a little bit bigger. How that will happen and what changes it will bring, who knows. But I will be thrilled to see more of Karen in the future. Love her, and love seeing Hen’s family life.

Chimney and Maddie

Oh My God. Finally! We’ve been waiting forever for this moment. Now we’ll see what happens as the romance blooms.

Bobby and Athena

We’re still waiting to hear if Bobby will be reinstated (he will), but this couple was certain about their future together. As someone who got married in a courthouse ceremony, I can assure you all that it is the way to go. And, it was a better fit for these two in reality. It was a great way to end the season on a happy note. Now we’ll see what’s next for these two.

Season 3 of 9-1-1 will return in the fall, likely alongside the spin off series 9-1-1: Lone Star. I’ll see you all then.
