ONE CHICAGO: CHICAGO MED “Never Let You Go”, CHICAGO FIRE “Until the Weather Breaks” and CHICAGO P.D. “What Could Have Been” Episode Round-up
It was guns-a-blazing in the ONE CHICAGO world this week! Read on to find out why shots were fired during the latest CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO P.D.…
Comings & Goings
On MED, Cornelius Rhodes, Gwen Garrett, Emily and baby Vincent once again make an appearance. While on P.D., deputy superintendant Kate Brennan is back. This episode also marks the last we see of Burgess’ beau Blair and presumably the last of Alderman Price.
Risky Business/ Tension in the Air
This week it’s safe to say these two themes overlap in ONE CHICAGO world with gun violence setting the scene for all the drama that went down in all three episodes.
On MED, a 16-year-old girl who is 38 weeks pregnant is admitted. The teen is planning to give the baby up for adoption and the accident sends her into early labor. The estranged baby daddy shows up and is distraught when he finds out that she’s not keeping the baby. As director of patient services, Goodwin tries to calm him down in the waiting room. He leaves the hospital only to return not long after with a gun. He accidentally shoots the girl’s father as well as a security guard and in a panic, ends up holding whoever is left in the ED hostage. Those hostages include Dr Rhodes, Cornelius Rhodes, Maggie, Dr Halstead, Dr Manning, the girl, her father, the woman planning to adopt the baby, Dr Choi, April, a young sick boy and the security guard. With the ED on lockdown with limited resources, the stakes are high for all these patients at some point during the episode but the gunman is reluctant to let any of them go. Eventually the girl’s father and Cornelius are released from the ED. Goodwin later ends up joining them when she’s sent in to bring supplies and the young gunman uses her as leverage and pulls a gun on her on multiple occasions.
All the patients survive but the desperate young man decides that he’s going to take the baby and the girl. While the girl refuses and the man is distracted, a pragmatic Goodwin takes the opportunity to take the baby. When the gunman realizes, he furiously demands Goodwin give the baby back but she bravely and calmly refuses. Instead further backing away from him. We realize she’s slowly leading him to the SWAT killspot, something she inititally refused to do. The SWAT team get their shot and the man bleeds out and eventually dies. Given how uneasy she felt about this, we wonder how she feels in the aftermath. Will this haunt her or does she stand by the choice she had to make?
On FIRE an intense storm has hit and is causing the power to glitch at 51. There are also reports of gunshots near a call that Hermann and his men are returning from. Hermann didn’t hear anything so they think nothing of it. However, when they go back into the firehouse, their fire engine opens to reveal a young stowaway who caught a ride with them. He hides out in the turncoat room and is discovered by Casey who then calls over Brett to assist and the pair take the young child, who refuses to speak, under their wing. Meanwhile a visiting firefighter from Detroit shows up, claiming his car has broken down and is seeking shelter til the storm blows over. Otis welcomes him into the house just as they’re called away to help investigate where the missing boy came from. The visiting firefighter is no firefighter – he’s responsible for the double homicide earlier that night and is looking for the kid who witnessed it. He is dangerous. When Otis figures out the man is not who he says he is, the man knocks Otis out and drags him to the bathroom. When Kidd finds the kid, the stranger comes up behind her and pulls a gun on her as she tries to protect the kid. She thinks quick and yells out to the rest of the team to warn them about the gunman. Cue Casey trying to be an action hero chasing the man around the firehouse. The 51 eventually follow him to the driveway and a smart thinking Severide pushes the man into the path of Ambo 61, which is arriving back after taking the power guy to the hospital after being electrocuted. (Guys, I know they’re professionals and all but I’m pretty sure getting onto the roof to try and fix power while a storm is happening is a recipe for disaster! I actually wondered at one point if they were pretending to be technicians…) The guys hold him down until PD shows up.
This week’s P.D. is personal when Burgess’ new love interest is shot and then dies in the ambulance on route to the hospital. The fact that he was found in an area known for drugs and 20K was found in his trunk, signs point to his death being drug related but Burgess is adamant that this is not the case. She says he barely drinks but when records show he has a narcotics rap from age 17 and that perhaps he was involved with a reverend who also has a drugs rap, signs are not looking good. We later find out that Blair took the rap for his drug addict father and that he truly was a good guy. What really happened was that he had discovered that Price’s daughter and reverend were involved back in the day and were involved with drugs, which lead to an unfortunate incident of Price’s daughter’s friend ODing. Instead of calling the cops, the daughter called her dad and Price covered it up. With the election three weeks away and Price overtaking Superintendent Kelton on the polls, Price’s wife was determined not to let her husband lose everything when they were so close so she’s the one who killed Blair and the reverend. In the end, Price takes the fall for his wife and is arrested.
Undercover Antics
No undercover antics on P.D., but we do have John Garrett – if that’s even his real name – posing as a firefighter from Detroit on FIRE.
Romance Roundup
This week’s MED opens up with exes Manning and Halstead on friendly terms and he noting she went to a wine festival. She confirms she went with new beau Phillip and mentions having a pinot, something her ex notices she didn’t used to like but we guess new relationship means new things. After the Lockwood, Nat tells Halstead that she knows he had the opportunity to leave the ED and be safe but that he came back for her. The moment is then interrupted by FBI agent Ingrid and Nat notices that there is something happening between the two. We have to say that it’s nice to see the exes on good terms and we hope that they can make their friendship work. After everything that has happened, we’re not expecting them to reunite any time soon and maybe it’s better that way.
On FIRE, Brett and Foster are debating dating within the department. Given her past experiences, Brett is not exactly an advocate for it and thinks it’s a big world. Foster on the other hand believes that when you find someone and click, rules go out the window. When the facilities guys arrive to take a look at the glitchy power, Foster points out that one of them is cute. Brett doesn’t disagree but also warns Foster of the cautionary tale of Hazmat Zach. Aww, Hazmat Zach – totally forgot him! Brett might need to look closer than the facilities guy though – we saw the way Casey looked at her as she interacted with the stowaway child throughout the episode. That’s murky territory there and we don’t know how to feel about it – Brett was his ex wife’s best friend, not to mention Brett was involved with his ex-wife’s brother at one point!
That’s not the only love drama on FIRE. When Otis casually remarks that Severide has been MIA from Molly’s, Kidd pulls Foster aside to express her confusion over the lieutenant being so hot and cold. At first Foster doesn’t say anything about her part in Severide backing off, but later comes clean and Kidd is frustrated by the interference. She tells Severide that no one speaks for her and he shouldn’t feel the need to back off. Her ex tells her that Foster wasn’t trying to speak for her but rather has her back. Kidd apologizes to Foster and admits that Severide is her blindspot.
Speaking of exes, Burgess and Ruzek get quite a few moments together on P.D.. He’s visibly concerned about her after the murder of her lover and tells her if she needs someone to lean on, he has her back. When he checks up on her in the locker room she tries to push him away before admitting that she was falling for Blair. Ruzek tells her he’s sorry and you get the feeling that he’s not just referring to Blair’s death. On Twitter, Marina Squerciati aka Burgess, revealed that there was actually another part of that scene that got cut from the episode where Burgess admits that she didn’t trust Blair not to hurt her because everything that happened with Ruzek caused her to doubt herself. We really hope that we get that scene on the DVD!
Back to Burgess and Blair, the night that he was killed and she thought he was standing her up, she was actually meeting him to break up with him. As a result she feels like a fraud to meet his family who are travelling from Connecticut. When she and Dawson are searching his hotel room for evidence, not only are there a few photos of the couple but there was also a gift for her with a note. She opens the gift, which is a necklace from Tiffany’s, but doesn’t open the note until later. The note says ‘Kim, I can’t wait for what the future holds’. She then admits to ex Ruzek that she was going to tell Blair that she didn’t seem them long term so that he would leave town but now admits that she should have said that she was falling in love with him. At the end of the ep, she tells Blair’s sister that they were seeing each other and although it was early days, she thinks it could have been the start of something amazing. Aww!
All the Feels
Pretty much all the friendships in the ONE CHICAGO world gave us the feels this week – Goodwin and Dr Charles, plus April and Emily on MED. The fierce female friendship between Brett, Foster and Kidd has been one of my favorite things about FIRE this season as I’m all for women supporting each other. On P.D. Platt comforting Burgess at the scene and telling her she did good tugged at the heartstrings along with Ruzek looking out for Burgess. Even Voight and Price lamenting what could have been in the cell was a great moment of friendship and respect.
Crossover Count
Ruzek arrives on FIRE to arrest John Garrett. I have to say I love the moment where he refers to kid as a ‘brave son of a bitch’ and Brett scolds him for language. Would love to see more scenes between these two!
Worth Mentioning
During this week’s MED I did wonder if the shooter situation was going to trigger some sort of PTSD with Dr Halstea, but am glad to see that it didn’t seem to. Shoutouts to April for performing procedures that she wasn’t trained to do and saving the young boy’s life with Dr Choi’s help; and then to Goodwin for being calm and brave during a seriously intense situation. Things could have ended up a lot worse if it wasn’t for her!
On FIRE Casey has a “crazy idea” to do last minute plane deals where you show up to the airport and don’t know where you’re going. Severide passes, Capp points out tha’ts how you end up in Turkish prison, but Brett admires Casey’s gutso and always wanted to do something like that but has managed to talk herself out of it. By the episode’s end she has changed her tune and we’d like to see this little adventure! In other FIRE related observations, I still think everybody should have known better than to let the facility guy up on the roof during the storm. I could have told you that he was going to get knocked out and off the roof! Also, call me nitpicky, but while searching for the kid in the firehouse, at one point they call out ‘hey kid, call out’ – err the kid has been mute all ep so I wouldn’t hold your breath for a reply.
As for P.D., this was definitely one of the stronger eps this season. For me, the stronger eps are always the ones where the cases are personal. Now I know this can’t happen every episode but this is when the show truly shines – when the team are fuelled by personal connections even if they are meant to keep it professional. Side note, with Price now out of the race for Mayor, does this mean Kelton is now mayor by default? Were there any other candidates?
CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO P.D. and CHICAGO FIRE air Wednesday nights on NBC. New episodes resume May 8.
