Interview: Avra Friedman

By  |

We got the chance to chat with Avra Friedman about her role in Now Apocalypse as well as her many other talents. She is a hilarious comic, actor, writer and fingers crossed we will see one of her creations come to life on the screen soon. Check out our interview below and be sure to tune into Now Apocolypse on Starz.

What can you tell us about your character Magenta in Now Apocalypse?
Magenta is meek and untalented, yet a very determined aspiring actress. Before watching the show a lot of people have asked if I’m like my character. Absolutely not! I’ll take the determined, but everything else, no way!

You also have a live show in LA called, All My Single Friends – 1/2 show 1/2 dating app – How did that come to be? Is it like it sounds – you fix people up in the audience during the show?
It came about in two ways! My friend and I were doing stand-up all over LA and we got to the point where we wanted to have our own show. But we figured, there are a million comedy shows in LA on any given night, what would make somebody come to ours? How do we make ours different or stand out? I was testing the dating app waters at the time and saw a lot of friends doing the same thing. It was rough out there. There had to be a better way! And there is now! It’s All My Single Friends. It’s our service to the singles of LA (and occasionally NYC!) It’s an incredible comedy show and an opportunity for people to actually meet and talk in real life. We do match people up, yes, but something amazing happens when you put a bunch of people in a room, label them as single and everyone knows it, and let them go at it. We also interview and really showcase the single people on stage. The tequila helps too. It’s fun! You should come. To the show. Duh 😉

You do stand up comedy as well – is there a dream comedian you would like to work with?
I would love to work with Jenny Slate! In the past few years people have compared me to her and I was like, what? So I started listening to her on just about every podcast she’s ever been on. I’m not sure how similar we are but she feels like my soulmate! I wish Zach Galifianakis would do his musical comedy again. That would make for a VERY enjoyable duet!

Any upcoming projects we can alert our readers to?
Fingers crossed for the All My Single Friends TV show! We’re out there pitching now!
