When Call the Heart Recap: “The Queen of Hearts”

By  |

A new episode of the 6th season of When Calls the Heart aired on the Hallmark Channel last night.

Here is the synopsis for the episode:

Carson has to admit that he cares more about Faith than he has let on; the whole town buzzes with curiosity about the charming new saloon owner, Lucas Bouchard; Elizabeth teaches a student the importance of taking a chance on oneself.

Final Stage of Grief

In Elizabeth’s voiceover, which opened the new episode, we learned that it’s been a little over a year since Jack’s passing; and she has been telling little Jack all about his father. Obviously little Jack doesn’t understand anything being told to him, but I’d say it’s good that Elizabeth is in the final stage of grief.

A New Beginning

It was great to see that the show has updated the show’s introduction to include all of the cast and the new faces joining the show [albeit the new Mountie who has yet to officially appear in the show.]

The Saloon Owner

As expected, we got to meet the new saloon owner – Lucas Bouchard – who gave aloof answers about his background to everyone in town especially Bill, who (naturally) became very suspicious of the man. It only made sense since Lucas said he was a tumbleweed, moving from place to place and claiming that the only thing French about him was his name – which was a lie since Fiona, the switchboard operator, clearly heard him speaking French to a woman in Cape Fullerton.

Not only did the saloon get a new owner but also a new name: Queen of Hearts (ergo, the name of the episode]. Lucas also brought a player piano into the establishment, upsetting Rosemary since she was interested in putting her theatre background into use once again. He didn’t totally win over Elizabeth or Abigail yet – despite his apparent charm – as neither lady seemed able to make a determination on whether they liked him or not.

One person who didn’t seem turned off by Lucas was Clara, who got a job at the saloon as a waitress. This job is in addition to her myriad of work as a seamstress at Dottie’s shop. Her boyfriend Jesse wasn’t too happy about her taking the job at Queen of Hearts either.

It’s possible that Bill (and nearly everyone else for that matter) just might be right about Lucas, as it was revealed in the final scene that he had a small chest full of money hidden inside a crate that formerly housed all the salmon Lucas was providing at the reopening of the saloon. What is that all about?

A Lesson in Investing

It would seem that Henry has been trying his hand at investing, and in the beginning of the episode things were going well, but after Abigail gave Henry a small amount of money to invest the stock crashed. That didn’t stop Henry from actually doing something nice for Abigail. He pretended her money doubled and gave her the funds out of his own wallet. I know a lot of folks don’t like Henry because of what he did in the past, but he certainly seems to be doing all he can to make amends for all his wrong-doings and be a better man.

Let’s Ride a Bike

In a smaller story within the episode, Timmy – one of Elizabeth’s students – was very interested in learning to ride one of the bicycles that some of the other boys seemed very apt at riding. The only problem was Timmy wasn’t very good a riding a bike, as he had fallen in his last attempt, hurting his knee pretty badly. Elizabeth, being the teacher that she is, helped him get over his worries about not being able to learn how to ride, helping him master the skill.

A Budding Relationship

As was seen in last week’s premiere, Rosemary has become convinced that Carson and Faith should be a couple. In fact, she went so far as tricking them into a dinner date that didn’t end well. As Carson and Faith left that dinner, he stated that it was “ridiculous” that Rosemary would think they were good for each other. Of course that comment upset Faith, but Carson made up for his faux pas in this episode, by telling her that he thinks she’s special, and she said the same thing to him. They shared a dance together at the saloon reopening much to the delight of Rosemary.

What are your thoughts on Lucas Bouchard? Do you trust him? Or do you think he is going to be trouble for Hope Valley? Do you like the idea of Carson and Faith as a couple? When do you think Clara and Jesse will finally marry? Please share your comments on the episode below.
