When Call the Heart Season 6 Season Premiere Recap: “Phone Rings and Heartrstrings

By  |

The much anticipated 6th season premiere of When Calls the Heart aired on the Hallmark Channel last night.

Here is the synopsis for the episode:

The town of Hope Valley adjusts to the changing times while still maintaining the small-town bonds that connect them. After taking time off to care for her new baby, Elizabeth returns to teaching but soon realizes she needs more support than she could have imagined. Abigail prepares for the arrival of the telephone to Hope Valley. Bill and Gowen enter a bidding war for the town saloon. Rosemary senses a spark between Faith and Carson.

The New Mama

As the episode opened, we learned from Elizabeth’s voiceover – which has become a regular occurrence on the show – she explained that it’s been four months since little Jack was born, and it was time for her to return to teaching.

The only problem was that she had to leave Jack in the wonderful care of her friends, which included Florence, Maggie, Rosemary and Clara. It’s great that she has such caring friends, but Elizabeth was a bit worried about providing her beloved son with stability.

As the episode played out, Elizabeth decided to offer her older student Laura with a full-time position as nanny and presented her with the choice of becoming a correspondent student at a prep school. Thankfully Laura accepted: a decision that will benefit both of them.

Changes…

There are some big changes coming to Hope Valley including the sale of the saloon, as the owner needed to move to Union City to take care of his ailing mother and the introduction of the telephone to the small but thriving town.

The saloon sale made interesting competition between Henry and Bill, who have never really seen eye-to-eye before; and ironically, they both asked lumber company owner Lee to become their partner. Naturally, Lee told both men that they would have to ask his wife Rosemary before he would make a decision. That made for a bit of a disruption in Lee and Rosemary’s wedded bliss, but they quickly overcame that complication by telling the two men that they should team up as partners to buy the saloon. Unfortunately, the saloon was purchase by an out of towner who will be revealed soon enough.

More on the telephone coming to Hope Valley shortly…

Peeved Women of Hope Valley

Some of the women of Hope Valley were peeved throughout the episode, and rightly so…

• Rosemary was upset with Lee because of the problem with partnering with either Henry or Bill;
• Faith was a bit peeved with Carson because of the ambushed dinner party arranged by Rosemary;
• Molly and Florence were peeved at the new woman in town for wearing a dress that revealed her ankles (which for the time period was quite “scandalous”);
• Clara was irritated with Jesse because he made it clear that he sees a future with her, but he hasn’t asked for her hand yet (but he did come clean about why he wanted to wait); and,
• Even Elizabeth was a bit peeved with her situation not getting enough time with her son and her work.

Who’s That Girl?

The new woman in town – Fiona Miller – works for the telephone company, and it was so great to see her arrival in Hope Valley, stirring up a little controversy with her attire, but making the new telephone switchboard work all on her own.

Ring-A-Ling-Ling

While the first grand celebration of the telephone didn’t go off as hoped by Abigail and everyone in Hope Valley, thanks to Fiona’s ability to fix the equipment, they received their first phone call from the President of the phone company, taking them into the modern age.

As clips for the new season played out, it is clear that Fiona will have an effect on the women of Hope Valley, and a few new arrivals will make things interesting for everyone in the town.

What did you think of the start of the new season? Do you like the idea of Laura being little Jack’s nanny? Did you think Rosemary was right in ambushing Carson and Faith? What did you think of the new telephone switchboard operator Fiona? Please share your thoughts below.

The next new episode of When Calls the Heart will air on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, March 3 at 8/7c.
