Amazon’s HANNA: 3 Questions After the Sneak Peak

By  |

Hanna is premiering in March, but Amazon gave us a 24-hour sneak peak after the big game. Without having seen the movie that the show is based on, I have been told it stays relatively true to the source, with what may prove to be a major exception. The promos give me a give me a La Femme Nikita (the TV show) vibe, so I’m intrigued. Overall, it looks like it’s going to be a good show.

A young girl is raised in an isolated wilderness by her father, who rescued her from a sinister facility as a child.  He raises her to survive and fight, but she starts to get curious about the outside world when she reaches adolescence. In what appears to be foreshadowing, the father and daughter have an exchange where she asks: “If we’re never going to leave, then why are you training me?” To which he responds, “Because one day I may not be here, and you’ll have to cope on your own.” This turns out to be all too true when her curiosity brings her in contact with a young man, and makes the bad guys come looking. Hanna and her father run, and are separated in the process. But, what Hanna decides to do next might surprise you.

What’s going on at the facility?

We first see Hanna’s father and mother rescuing (?) her from what appear to be a government facility, but what exactly is the purpose of the facility? And why are Hanna and the other babies there? If the government is willing to go to such lengths to find and retrieve her, there must be something special about Hanna, but what is it?

Who is Erik?

Erik (Joel Kinnaman) seems like a loving father who rescues his daughter from peril, but then what life does he offer her? She’s raised in a wilderness with constant, brutal training. So, is that really saving her? What terrible alternative is he avoiding? Marissa (Mireille Enos) seems to know him well, and yet she has no interest in him anymore. Her only concern is Hanna. Another question about Erik is if he’ll suffer the same fate as his character did in the original movie, but it’s too early to guess about that.

What is Hanna’s Plan Now?

Hanna (Esme Creed-Miles) takes a surprising action at the end of the pilot, so what’s her plan? She’s been raised to evade and survive, so her actions seem so counter intuitive. Her curiosity about the outside world indicate that she’s not satisfied with the life her father offered (obviously), but I’m not sure that her current plan is the best either. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Hanna premieres on Amazon Prime video in March.

Cara spends way too much time thinking about subtext, and the puns are always intended. When not watching TV, she can generally be found with her nose in a book.
