ONE CHICAGO: CHICAGO MED “Death Do Us Part”, CHICAGO FIRE “Always a Catch” and CHICAGO P.D. “Descent” Episode Round-up
After a couple weeks hiatus, CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO P.D. returned this week for their fall finales and swan song for the year. Hostages, a wedding, a multi-vehicle accident and an addiction spiralling out of control – there certainly was no lack of action and drama as the ONE CHICAGO franchise wrapped up its 2018 run. Read on to find out what went down…
COMINGS AND GOINGS
Kicking it off on MED, it’s Will and Nat’s wedding day so not only do we meet Nat’s mom, we also see little Owen, who in fact has grown up a little. Speaking of blasts from the pasts, over on P.D., we see Antonio’s ex-wife, who shows up (and slaps him) when their daughter is kidnapped. On FIRE, Foster runs into a med school mentor, who is now a dean and encourages her to re-enrol. Boden puts in good words for her but in the end, Foster declines the offer because she likes the family she’s made at 51. She’s not the only permanent 51 family member – it looks like Ritter’s dog, Tuesday, will be sticking around since Boden thinks she’s the cutest thing ever and doesn’t mind her separation issues. That also brings us to ask – whatever happened to Pouch? Going off Mouch’s frantic body language, I guess that’s something we shouldn’t ask out loud…
RISKY BUSINESS
Can you hear my frustrated screams during this week’s MED? That’s what happens when Will Halstead stupidly accompanies the mobster’s sons on his wedding day! My frustrations were valid though because they discovered the bug that Will planted in the mobster’s home and have taken him to an abandoned location where they pull a gun on him and question him. Just when you thought things couldn’t get more intense, mobster Ray collapses but the son refuse to let Will take him to the hospital and insist that the doc treat him there WHERE THERE IS NO MEDICAL EQUIPMENT. Really boys? I can barely watch as Will drills into the man’s head. (After sterilising it of course.) As good of a doctor Will may be, it’s not enough and the man seriously needs to get to a hospital. “You sure we can’t keep him here?” “He has a hole in his head.” These guys – I just can’t. Even after they let the man go to hospital, Will’s still being held there though. In fact, almost gets shot if it weren’t for his brother and the FBI finally finding him. The drama’s not over yet though.
While all this is going on with Will, it turns out Rhodes and Bekker are operating on a person of interest who may be able to help Jay Halstead locate Will. It means delaying a second operation to get some answers out of him. Rhodes is hesitant until Jay reveals that the case involves Will, so he agrees but also tries to keep Bekker in the dark about it. He should no better at this point though that they’re better as a team with no secrets.
Over on FIRE, the start of shift is pretty relaxed and spirits are high when Cruz’s lady friend Chloe calls, offering to pick up baked treats on her way over to the firehouse. As 51 excitedly call out their orders to her over the phone, there’s a loud noise and the line goes dead. They then get a call and find themselves at one heck of a multi-vehicle accident! There are damaged cars everywhere as Cruz frantically tries to find Chloe. Eventually he finds her and she’s in pretty rough shape, so much so that she has to be medivaced to Med. Although her condition is looking pretty dicey, she thankfully pulls through. (Side note, I’m slightly surprised that the episode didn’t spend a bit more time on the accident, both at the site and then the aftermath like investigating the cause.)
It seems like it’s busy day on the roads in Chicago as while they’re on route to Med, Ambo 61 is out of commission when the truck in front of them loses its load and causes the ambulance to veer off the road and blow its tyre. With a young boy injured and in need of serious medical attention, this is the last thing that Brett and Foster need. Brett frantically tries to wave down any passing by vehicle on the busy road but most just honk and drive buy. Finally someone stops and she asks them to give her their car so they can rush the boy to hospital.
Casey and reporter Naomi are still digging into the suspicious trailer fires case. When she scores a meeting with the trailer company, Casey accompanies her and just as well that he did, because they are not happy with her and they become quite aggressive and threaten to take her down. As a reporter, this is nothing new to Naomi and she isn’t the least bit phased. Perhaps she should have taken their threats a bit more seriously because the closing moments of FIRE for 2018 are of her and Casey trapped in his burning apartment with flames quickly spreading. (It’s also ironic that the only fire we see this episode is one off-duty!)
On P.D. Antonio’s pill popping habits are getting a tad bit out of control. His doctor refuses to refill his prescription so the usually by the book detective takes his anger out on his bathroom mirror at home. The next time we see Antonio is when Burgess nearly shoots him as he tries to sneak away from an area Intelligence are investigating. He manages to cover his tracks with a story that he got a tip from a CI and he was following it up on his own, but litle does the team know that he was seeking out a supplier. Things get a little messier when his supplier is arrested and then his daughter is kidnapped as revenge. (Poor Antonio, can’t catch a break when it comes to his kids being kidnapped – his son was kidnapped in the very first episode of P.D.) Before you know it, the team learns the truth. That’s not the end of Antonio’s troubles though – after they recover his daughter, he, Voight and Ruzek come face to face with the guy involved. As much as his colleagues try to hold him back and try to stop him from doing something he’ll regret, Antonio gets into a tussle with the guy and before you know it, he’s pushed the guy out of the building, who then plunges to his death several storeys down. As sirens blare in the background, the trio look at each other as the screen fades to black. In the words of Ruzek, “what the hell just happened?”
TENSION IN THE AIR
ROMANCE ROUNDUP
On P.D., Ruzek and Upton’s fling doesn’t seem as casual as they make it out to be – she’s accompanying to check out a place he’s interested in. Does that sound like a casual thing to you? I don’t think so. Plus, he gets pretty protective when they’re talking to a person of interest. It’s not going to be long before the rest of the team catches on. I wonder how Burgess will react…
CROSSOVER COUNT
The crossover count in the ONE CHICAGO world this week was actually pretty low. Apart from Jay Halstead popping up on MED, everyone else stayed in their own shows. There were visits and references to MED but none of the MED stars popped up on the other shows.
