Do You Remember Jake 2.0?
Back in September of 2003, a new science fiction drama called Jake 2.0 debuted on UPN (the United Paramount Network, which later merged with The WB in 2006 to create The CW). Jake 2.0 was created by Silvio Horta – who went on to create the popular ABC series Ugly Betty – and starred actor Christopher Gorham (Insatiable, Ugly Betty and Covert Affairs) in the lead role.
The series revolved around a computer expert, Jake Foley, who worked for the U.S. government’s National Security Agency and was accidentally infected by nanobots, which gave him superhuman powers. He was able to control technology with his brain, making him “the ultimate human upgrade.” You can think of this short-lived series as a pre-cursor to and cross between the Josh Holloway-led short-lived drama Intelligence and the fan-favorite, long-running series Chuck as well as a bit of The Six Million Dollar Man thrown in for good measure.
The other lead cast members included
Philip Anthony-Rodriguez, who went on to star in The Secret Life of an American Teenager, Grimm and Days of Our Lives as Kyle Duarte;
Judith Scott, who went on to appear in episodes of Dexter, Castle and Snowfall, as Deputy Director Louise “Lou” Beckett;
Marina Black as Sarah Carter; and,
Keegan Connor Tracy, who went on to star in Once Upon a Time, The Magicians and Battlestar Galactica, as Dr. Diane Hughes.
Among the recurring cast members were:
Miranda Frigon, who has appeared in Primeval: New World, Heartland and countless Hallmark Channel movies, as Tech Agent Susan Carver; and,
Grace Park, who went on to star in Battlestar Galactica, Hawaii Five-0 and the new series A Million Little Things, as Fran Yoshida (Dr. Hughes’ assistant).
Just some of the guest stars of Jake 2.0 episodes included:
Tyler Labine, who went on to appear in Reaper, Deadbeat and can now be seen in the new drama New Amsterdam;
Matt Czuchry, who went on to star in Gilmore Girls, The Good Wife and is now the star of The Resident;
Emmanuelle Chriqui, who went on to appear in Entourage and will soon be seen in the FOX drama The Passage;
Warren Christine, who went on to appear in Alphas, Chicago Fire, Motive, Girlfriends Guide to Divorce and most recently in The Resident;
Martin Cummins, who went on to appear in Kyle XY, UnReal and can currently be seen in both Riverdale and When Calls the Heart;
Kandyse McClure, who went on to appear in Battlestar Galactica, Hemlock Grove and Ghost Wars;
Carly Pope (Chris’s former Popular co-star), who went on to appear in 24, Suits and Arrow;
Mark Sheppard, who went on to star in Battlestar Galactica and most notably on Supernatural;
Rob Stewart, who has appeared in episodes of Nikita, Beauty and the Beast, Suits, Incorporated and most recently seen in Killjoys;
Devon Bostick, who went to appear in Being Erica and The 100;
Erica Cerra, who went on to star in Eureka, Supernatural and The 100;
Brendan Penny, who went on to appear in the Canadian cop drama Motive, a number of Hallmark Channel movies and is one of the ensemble cast members of Chesapeake Shores; and,
Missy Peregrym, who went on to appear in Reaper, Rookie Blue, Van Helsing and can now be seen in the new drama FBI.
Oh and remember I mentioned the show was a little bit like the classic series The Six Million Dollar Man? Well, veteran actor Lee Majors – Steve Austin himself – actually guest starred in one episode of Jake 2.0.
The first season of Jake 2.0 was expected to consist of at least 16 episodes, but it was cancelled on January 14, 2004 due to low ratings, leaving four episodes unaired in the United States as well as three more episodes planned for before the cancellation ax fell.
