Burden of Truth Recap: “Cause in Fact” (Season Finale)
The Canadian import Burden of Truth came to a close on The CW last night with a big win for the high school girls of Millwood and satisfaction over a job very well done by Billy Crawford and Joanna Hanley against not only her father David but also the parent company of Matheson Steel.
As the episode opened, it was clear that Joanna and Billy were still a little concerned that they could find a way to defeat the Goliath of Millwood. Sure, Joanna had that letter written by now Mayor of Millwood Alison Sheppard, but was she actually going to use it in court? Sure, they had Nate Dawson – the whistleblower – but would his testimony hold up or would Joanna’s dad David figure out a way to discredit him? Then there was the surprise item given to Joanna by Gerrilyn Spence – which turned out to be her birth certificate, proving that she was underage when she gave birth to Luna – who was fathered by Joanna’s philandering dad.
Obviously they used Nate’s testimony in court and David did slightly discredit him, but not too badly at least according to Billy. It was time to call in the big guns: going to the mayor with the letter she wrote to David way back when she was working for him as a college intern. Alison threatened David – since he was having an affair with her – that if he didn’t leave his wife she would use documents for which she had copies of, showing his duplicitous nature. Alison, however, told Billy she couldn’t take sides. Billy stated to her that it was “us against them and your choosing them.”
Those words seemed to take hold of Alison’s better nature, as she brought the documents to Joanna and Billy so they could use them in court; which, of course, they did. What’s more Joanna threatened David with Gerrilyn’s birth certificate; and that seemed to do the trick in the case with Billy, Joanna and the girls of Millwood coming out victors. P&L – the parent company of Millwood Steel – agreed to clean up the dumpsites, pay $1 million for all future clean ups and $2 million each per girl affected by the toxic contaminants.
EXCEPT, David made a secret reveal to Joanna after court was adjourned. P&L made him an offer to keep any settlement under $20 million, which is exactly what he did, allowing him to make out better than anyone else. Damn, man!
Elsewhere, Owen wasn’t going to let Diane just leave Millwood and it certainly looked like she was staying if that last montage was any example. Luna and Molly were setting off to see both oceans [something that Molly really wanted to do, but didn’t think she’d ever get the chance] after the court victory. Taylor discovered a hidden bag filled with money in her father’s shed, leaving town with it. And, despite Billy asking Joanna to stay, suggesting she could work with him at his office, she headed off to Winnipeg for a new job that’s closer to her mother. And, the biggest reveal at the end was that Joanna her name. She will be known as Joanna Chang now.
Did you expect the court case to turn out the way that it did? Were you pleased to see Diane and Owen together as well as Luna and Molly getting a happy ending? Were you disappointed that Joanna didn’t stay in town with Billy? And how about her changing her name? Please share your thoughts on the season finale in our comments section below.
The second season of Burden of Truth was supposed to go into production in Canada this summer, but those of us across the border in the States will have to wait and see if The CW will pick up that new season for airing at some point in 2019.
