Burden of Truth Recap: “Home to Roost”

The time is drawing nigh for the case against Matheson Steel on the Canadian import Burden of Truth. Now with David Hanley at the helm of the defense, he made sure to drown Campbell and Associates with countless boxes of files to be used for discovery. Thankfully, Joanna was able to appeal to the judge to get back on the case despite her father’s underhanded attempts to push her off the case.

Throughout the episode, of course, Joanna’s father showed his true colors; first by treating his former lover and mother of his daughter Luna – Gerrilyn Spence – despicably and second by treating his own co-counsel Alan Christie just as poorly. Alan, in turn, not only quit the law firm but also decided to switch sides, helping the girls prepare for the testimonies. It seemed that the prosecution might have had the upper-hand with Alan’s assistance, but in the end it was nothing more than an ambush by David, as his firm planned to file a motion for summary judgment on the claim against P&L, the parent company of Matheson Steel. The motion hearing will take place in one week’s time – i.e., the season finale – and if Campbell and Associates does not win this hearing then the entire case will be lost.

Elsewhere in the story, Joanna decided to pull out her last card, traveling to Winnipeg to see her mother for the first time in 15 years. It was Joanna’s hope that her long-estranged mother would recall any details about P&L and Matheson Steel, as her parents were still together, living in Millwood at the time. Given their long estrangement, their reunion was obviously strained, but the truth was quickly revealed. David threatened Joanna’s mother – who he helped with her immigration years prior – with deportation if she didn’t leave and have no contact with Joanna [showing his true colors even more].

Unfortunately, Joanna’s mother said she couldn’t really remember anything of value to help with the case, but in the end, she presented Joanna with a box of “David’s stuff” for which she kept as insurance in case David would follow through on his threats of deportation. Included in that box of “stuff” was a love letter from a young woman to David. That woman is Alison Shepperd who is now the mayor of Millwood, according to something Alan said to Joanna in the final scene, she just might be able to win the case because of that letter. So what does it say?!

Viewers also got to learn that Owen was recovering from his attack in the hospital, but he couldn’t remember much of the attack. While he was recovering, Diane – his girlfriend – did a little bit of investigation of her own, using her skills as a guidance counselor to read their “tells.” She not only spoke to Officer Mercer (who was the actual culprit of Owen’s attack, but who claimed he was doing all he could to find who committed the crime) but also Ben Matheson; and she shared with Owen that she believed Mercer attacked Own on Ben’s order. The only problems are she has to prove it somehow and also be careful since Mercer basically threatened her two kids. I certainly hope someone is able to bring both of those men down!

Next week’s episode of Burden of Truth will be the season finale of the debut season. It will air on The CW on Wednesday, October 3 at 8/7c. A second season of the show has already aired in Canada, but it has not been announced yet if it will air in the States.
