VERONICA MARS: What We’d Love to See in Season 4
News broke this week that Hulu is working with Veronica Mars EP Rob Thomas to bring the show back for a limited fourth season. Kristen Bell is signed on – and in a way that won’t interrupt the joy that is The Good Place – and the strategic leaking of this news to gauge fan interest are both promising signs that this could actually happen.
Many a Nice Girl watched the show, the movie, and maybe read a book or two, and with that in mind, here are three things we each want to see, and two things we’re leery of seeing if the deal goes through.
Things I Want to See in a VM Revival:
Melissa
1. Wallace being a baller coach at Neptune High School.
2. Veronica coming to terms with who she is and Keith being happy for her.
3. A mix of old faces and new.
Roz
1. A good mystery that can hold up over the series. The books were great for good mysteries, and are grittier than the show (but still relatable and topical).
2. Veronica realizing how much she wants to work on her relationship with Logan and following that idea in a way that doesn’t diminish her own agency and her job.
3. Surprisingly, Dick’s emotional journey continuing.
Rueben
1. An even distribution of story for the other characters not just Veronica and Logan.
2. One big mystery to solve that actually gets solved before the final episode with captivating B-stories that allow the other characters to shine.
3. Keith accepting Logan in Veronica’s life and not giving her a hard time about her career decision.
Ange
1. The core cast from the show back but also their characters being significant to the storylines and not just thrown in for the sake of being thrown in. That being said, I am not opposed to sneaky yet clever cameos from stars previously on the show and I feel like the film did a pretty good job of that.
2. Development and growth of relationships – like Roz, I want Veronica to want to work on her relationship with Logan. (Stop running, girl!) Just like Rueben and Melissa, I want Keith to accept the choices Veronica has made in life, both personally and professionally.
3. A captivating mystery that will have me on the edge of my seat and blown away by whodunnit! I don’t want to feel let down the way I was during times in season three…
Things I’m Leery About in a VM Revival:
Melissa
1. Relying too much on nostalgia – keep the universe and familiar faces we love, but don’t get bogged down in the past.
2. The remixed theme song from the movie. I hate it.
Roz
1. A story that’s too big for eight episodes where the resolution is rushed. The movie felt right, but some of the later mysteries in season three were hard to rationalize.
2. Not enough quality time with the other cast; I’m sure everyone wants to come back, but give them all something good to do.
Rueben
1. Agree with Melissa: Give us the original theme song from Seasons 1 and 2 – not the altered version from Season 3 and definitely not the version from the movie.
2. That the overarching mystery will focus on something from the past. Been there, done that. Let it be something new and different from anything that Veronica has had to tackle before.
Ange
1. Core characters apart from Veronica, Logan, and Keith not getting enough character development. I want to know how Wallace, Mac, Weevil, and Dick have changed over the years. I don’t need a long explanation but acknowledgment and references would be nice. They’re just as much a pivotal part of the Mars/Neptune universe as Veronica, Logan, and Keith.
2. Jumping on the bandwagon here – original theme song please! *goes off to listen to the show’s soundtrack *
If this has you wanting to rewatch the show/movie, Mel revealed her Team Piz conversion, The Men of Mars were Nice Boys of the week, take a look at PaleyFest’s panel on the movie and we explore the noir of Veronica Mars.
