Comic Con

Conan takes on Comic Con

Conan O’Brien once again moved his show to San Diego for Comic Con and lucky fans scored tickets to the tapings. NiceGirl Mynda and I were fortunate enough to get tickets for a taping on Friday for a show that aired on Saturday, July 21st. They got us all seated early in the Spreckles theater and then warmed us all up with a hilarious fan dance-off (to Baby Got Back, of course), a short comedy set, and a few songs from the show’s Basic Cable Band.

After some basic rules – laugh and clap and make it sound like the crowd is 5x as big – the taping started and we were shown a clip of Conan revisiting the superhero suit (and it’s strategic “enhancements”) that he had gotten for a previous Comic Con taping several years ago. He then made his grand entrance in the suit, lowered from the ceiling of the theater. After unhooking his harness, he strutted through the audience, showing off the suit to his adoring fans. This part cracked me up, because he did pretty much exactly the same thing when I attended a previous taping at the Con and a hilariously awkward picture of me admiring the suit lives on in infamy in NiceGirls lore.

After he changed back into his normal suit off stage, Jamie Lee Curtis showed up and administered a Comic Con knowledge quiz to Conan, which he passed handily. Two observations: 1) Jamie Lee Curtis looks fantastic and 2) she’s a serious badass.

The main guests of the night were the cast of Glass, a new movie from M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan was there as well as stars Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sarah Paulson. They talked about the movie and M. Night’s infamous Halloween parties and they showed us the trailer.

After the show finished, they gave every attendee a special edition Funko Pop! of Conan dressed up as Antman. Mynda and I still hadn’t had enough laughs, so we headed over to a local comedy club where some of Conan’s writers were performing. We had a great time! You can watch the full episode here, at least for the next four days.

Check out the Conan on TBS on weeknights at 11/10c.
