Celebrating TV Librarians on National Library Workers Day

By  |

It’s National Library Workers Day! We love our local libraries and the staff who diligently work to keep them well-stocked, well-organized, and up-to-date. But since we’re a site about television shows, we’re shouting out a few of our favorite fictional librarians today in honor of their real-life counterparts.

The Librarians

The Librarians season 4

I mean, it’s right there in the title of this TNT series. The Librarians centers on an ancient organization hidden beneath the Metropolitan Public Library dedicated to protecting an unknowing world from the secret, magical reality hidden all around. This group solves impossible mysteries, fights supernatural threats and recovers powerful artifacts, including the Ark of the Covenant, the Spear of Destiny and Excalibur. Originally a series of made-for-TV movies, TNT eventually aired four seasons of the show starring Noah Wyle, Rebecca Romijn, Christian Kane, Lindy Booth, and John Harlan Kim.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Rupert Giles reading

Confession: I crushed on Rupert “The Ripper” Giles for seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Super smart, well-read, kind, British accent, nerdy hot, plays the guitar, surprisingly good with weapons, bad boy past – if I’d attended Sunnydale High School, I would’ve hung around the library a lot, too. Giles started out as the stereotypical librarian with his distrust of computers and partiality for order and quiet. But as the series progressed, we learned a lot more about the man wearing all that tweed, and he was anything but stereotypical.

Parks and Recreation

Parks and Rec library is the worst

And now for something completely different…when Leslie Knope first described the librarians of Pawnee, Indiana, I was shocked and appalled. Then we met Tammy II and I was like, it’s all true. If this isn’t one of the greatest scenes featuring a librarian of all time, then Ron Swanson doesn’t like bacon.

Your local library may not have staff out there recovering mysterious artifacts or saving us from demons or (Dewey forbid) cavorting around the library naked, but I guarantee your librarians can help you find adventure and mystery and magic in the pages of books!
