When Calls the Heart Recap: “Home Is Where the Heart Is”

By  |

A new episode of the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart aired last night, focusing on the much-anticipated homecoming of Constable Jack Thornton as well as trouble at the bank in Hope Valley and the arrival of an old friend of Rosemary.

Let’s take a look at what took place during the third episode of fifth season of the beloved family friendly drama:

Coming Home

After last week’s upsetting news that the Mounties were facing resistance from the criminal gangs in the Northern Territories, Elizabeth was naturally very concerned for Jack’s safety. Much to her surprise, Florence led her out of the town mercantile where she found a league of Mounties arriving in town. She raced toward them calling out Jack’s name, she looked for him in the town tavern, but he wasn’t there. She eventually found him among the men riding into town and leapt into his arms. Welcome home indeed.

Bank Trouble

The opening scene focused on Mr. Jenkins, the bank manager, and Lee Coulter. It would seem the bank did not have the sawmill’s payroll which was due to be distributed; and Jenkins told Lee the money would arrive in a few days.

Naturally the concern over the bank’s immediate future became a great concern to everyone in town especially when the bank was unexpectedly closed until further notice AFTER Jenkins said he was going out of town for one day to seek a short term loan from a bank in a neighboring town. Jenkins locked himself up in the bank with a gathering mob outside all demanding to know what was happening and looking to Abigail, as town mayor, to solve the problem.

Budding Relationship

There is a new lady in town and she is a long-time friend of Rosemary. Her name is Sophia Connelly and she is a newly licensed architect, which is obviously not your typical occupation for a women in that time period. But it is convenient that she’s in town since she couldn’t land a job in the city, but her skills could very well be put to use in Hope Valley.

It also doesn’t hurt that she seemed to have chemistry with town doctor Carson Shepherd, who may not be ready for a new relationship since it hasn’t been that long since he lost his beloved wife; but Sophia certainly seemed smitten. And, how about the look on Faith’s face when she saw Carson and Sophia talking at Abigail’s Café? Could there be a little level of jealousy there?

Lesson Learned

The students at the Hope Valley school learned a few valuable lessons too. The school inherited an old mimeograph machine and they were going to create a school newsletter. Haddie, one of the older students in class, volunteered to be the editor; but while trying to find a big headline for the front page of the newsletter, Haddie learned a valuable lesson about getting her facts straight when she thought a fellow student was cheating; as well as not moving forward with an article based on nothing but gossip.

Big Announcement

Everyone knows that Elizabeth and Jack are engaged, but the couple surprised their closest friends with the big announcement that they plan to get married in TWO WEEKS. Holy white veils that is fast.

What are your thoughts on last night’s episode? Were you happy to see Jack finally return and be reunited with Elizabeth? What do you think will happen with the town’s bank? What are your thoughts on Sophia and Carson? Please share your thoughts below.

The next new episode of When Calls the Heart will air on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, March 11 at 9/8c.
