Harald and Halfdan’s pre battle song and ultimate conflict

The once united brothers now now find themselves on the eve of battle singing the same notes from opposite sides. Harald Finehair (Peter Franzén) and Halfdan the Black (Jasper Pääkkönen) equally believe they alone are correct and ask the gods blessing in victory. In this moment we see the exquisite pain borne from the conflict of differing choices which places family at odds.

Later, when Harald struck down his brother, the bitterness of death was tempered with the sweet hope of glory in Valhalla. May we all be so lucky in our own passing to cross over with such secure peace.

Lagertha’s unwavering faith

“Now I can die.” – Lagertha
Throughout all the death, bloodshed, betrayal and loss Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) has remained unshakable due in large part to her unwavering belief in the gods. Tonight we saw both the beginning and possible end of that fidelity.

Lagertha, dutiful daughter, loving mother, devoted wife and fierce leader discovered even sure belief can fail under the crushing accumulated weight of trauma. Tonight we saw our favorite shield maiden’s mind break under that burden. Sometimes belief is not enough in the face of such loss. Astrid was the final blow to that confidence.

Floki’s sacrifice

“This is not right. This is not how I imagined everything.” – Floki
Trouble came all to soon to those who followed Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) into his promised land. The shipbuilder holds fast in his belief and even doubles down in true Floki style by offering a tremendous sacrifice in order to appease the gods. Floki willingly offered up the one thing we cannot bear to consider, his own life. “We have failed the gods. We have behaved like humans. We must offer a sacrifice that will mean something. A sacrifice that will give us a second chance.
Therefore, I offer myself as that sacrifice.”
