ONE CHICAGO Women: Chicago Fire 5×03, Chicago P.D. 4×05 & Chicago Med 2×06 recap
Getting too attached seemed to be the theme of the ONE CHICAGO world this week, especially with the women. Read on to find out what went on with the leading ladies of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D.and Chicago Med…
Gabriela Dawson: Just when we thought Casey handled being blackmailed by a fellow alderman last week, this week’s episode opened with Dawson finding out that DCFS were going to be taking Louie from her. Knowing he’s not powerful enough to handle the situation, Casey calls on political consultant Susan Weller (who Dawson still doesn’t know pulled the moves on Casey in last season’s finale) to help them out. And she does – a little too quickly for Casey’s liking, and so he realises that she was the one who instigated the drama to begin with as the alderman that was blackmailing Casey is also a client of hers. A fierce Casey warns her to stay out of his family’s life but her smile as she leaves makes me think that we haven’t seen the last of her. Louie/alderman drama aside, Dawson gives Brett advice about dealing with her brother, P.D‘s Antonio, which is basically her giving the potential lovebirds her blessing right?
Sylvie Brett: Brett is pining over Antonio and it doesn’t help that she hasn’t heard a peep out of him since their flirtation at Molly’s two episodes ago. The paramedic is so in lust that she tries to convince Mouch that they need to add in another love interest to their story (that nobody at Firehouse 51 knows about yet), more specifically a male detective. When Antonio drops by the firehouse to see Kidd about a case, Brett quietly confronts him about going radio silent on her and he tries to let her down gently, telling her that they’re at different stages of their lives – he’s divorced with kids and has a dangerous job and doesn’t want to drag her into his messy life. Unbeknownst to the pair, Dawson sees them talking and later tells Brett not to take notice of what her brother says because he is definitely into Brett. This gives Brett the confidence she needs and the next time she sees him at Molly’s, she firmly tells him she likes him and she’s aware that his job can get dangerous, but so can hers and she’s a big girl that can handle his baggage. Looks like a new romance is about to take off! I have to say, I am loving how confident Brett is this season. You go, girl! Also in the ONE CHICAGO world, Brett makes a brief appearance in this week’s Med, bringing in Dr Manning’s patient.
Stella Kidd: Kidd goes all white knight this week after rescuing a homeless teen from an underground fire. She connects with him while on the scene but has to temporarily leave him at the ambulance while she goes back out there. When she returns, he has gone, leaving his backpack behind. As she goes through his backpack in the hopes of finding something that will provide details on where he’s from, Kidd finds medication. When she goes to Brett to find out what it is, Brett tells her that it’s Hepatitis C medication. Now even more determined to find him, Kidd keeps digging and call upon Antonio Dawson for help, only for him to find out that he’s wanted for breaking and entering a pharmacy. While it was so he could get his medication and he had no intention to harm, the authorities don’t see it that way. Kidd also goes to Boden for help, who warns her about getting too involved with cases. We’re all wondering why she is fighting so hard to save this kid and she says she wants to help him get his life on track. It’s clear she sees something in him and can relate, whether it’s to do with her own personal experience or the Grant situation, we don’t know. In the end, she does find the kid and ends up bringing him to Chief Boden’s office where Med’s Sharon Goodwin and State Attorney Mark Jefferies from the upcoming Chicago Justice, are waiting. It turns out that Boden called in a few favours for Kidd after all. Aww!
Erin Lindsay: This week’s ep opens with Lindsay and Halstead at Chicago Med where Halstead’s doctor brother is informing them that yet another wave of patients have been admitted for ODing on heroin-laced with fentanyl, which kicks off this week’s big case. Lindsay also helps Halstead realise that he’s been handling the whole Mouse wanting to re-enlist situation all wrong and after some wise words from her, Halstead gives Mouse his blessing and support. Lindsay also appears on this week’s Med, helping out Dr Charles and Dr Reese with a “hypothetical” sex trafficking case. This looks set to be a multi-episode arc if this week’s events are anything to go by.
Kim Burgess: Well, it was fun while it lasted. Ready for another shift together, Platt pulls Burgess and Tay aside before they head out to inform Tay that this is sadly her last shift at District 21, as she is being moved back to her old beat. Burgess is outraged and tells Tay they will fight this. She’s still fired up as they’re driving on the streets when suddenly a young boy jumps in front of their car (and thankfully Burgess doesn’t hit him). He’s covered in blood, but it’s not his – it’s his dad’s, whom the duo discover was stabbed in the neck by the boy’s mother. At Med, the father pleads for Burgess to take his son rather than let DCFS take him. As they put together pieces of the case, which includes confronting the boy’s mother, with help from Platt, they realise that they have been played and that the father actually stabbed himself in an attempt to frame his estranged wife so he could get custody of their son. While it’s great that they solved the case, it’s not enough – Tay is still leaving. But not before some words of wisdom to Burgess. She advises her to go after what she wants and not to wait, so next thing we see is Burgess going up to Voight’s office after shift and telling him if there’s ever another opportunity to join Intelligence, she wants in. He tells her to be ready and she assures him that she is. Seeing as we know that Antonio Dawson is moving over to the State’s Attorney office soon, it looks like Burgess could be joining the ranks of Intelligence quicker than she thinks.
Trudy Platt: While we know Platt has a lot of power, it’s sadly not enough to keep Julie Tay at District 21. The tough desk sergeant informs the young cop that she took under her wing that sadly her former Commander went above Platt to have Tay reinstated in her old position. Also in this episode, Platt is not only on babysitting duty watching the kid from Burgess and Tay’s case, but she also asks Mouse to do some digging on the boy’s father and the info that he provides is what helps the two beat cops uncover the truth about the situation. As a thank you for his help, Platt has Mouse’s record cleaned so that he can re-enlist – something that he had previously asked Voight to do but Voight decided not to. We also got a tiny insight into Platt’s family history in this ep too – while she was watching Chase, the young boy, she mentioned that her mother used to have anger issues too.
Sharon Goodwin: First off this week, Sharon appears on Fire, doing a favor for Chief Boden and Kidd at the end of the ep by helping a young homeless teen get treated properly for Hepatitis C. Then on Med, we see the Emergency department brimming with patients and not enough beds, but the chief administrator is firm in decision not to start referring patients to other hospitals. At the end of the episode, we catch a glimpse of Sharon and Maggie having a drinking at Molly’s and I have to say it’s awesome seeing a bit of a girl’s night out.
Maggie Lockwood: Tasked with finding more beds for patients in the overcrowded Emergency department, Maggie ends up going upstairs to ICU to see if they have any spare beds. She spots one, but is told that the doctors refuse to use it because it’s basically a cursed room where patients die. Even Rhodes is one of those doctors who refuses to have a patient in it. Undeterred, Maggie asks Rhodes for his friend Keoni’s number and she calls him in to basically uncurse it, using techniques from his Hawaiian culture.
Dr Natalie Manning: Remember Dr Manning’s young patient who has cancer and was admitted for a viral infection two episodes ago? She’s rushed back in this week, her skin all yellow due to liver failure. Due to the liver failure, her brain is also swollen has to be drained by neurosurgeon Dr Abrams but the young girl’s symptoms suggest that there is already damage to the brain. Nonetheless, an attached Nat is keeping the faith and tells the parents that their daughter is a fighter and that she’s seen cases like this where patients recover. After telling the parents this, a guilt-ridden Nat admits to Dr Charles that she’s given them false hope. It’s pretty heartbreaking when the young patient codes and passes away after the surgery. Seeing that Nat is taking it pretty hard, Dr Choi suggests she visits his patient that he asked her to consult on, at her home. This teenage girl was admitted to Med after she ingested a prototype that she created because she is a “bio-hacker” and she and her friends have their own bio-engineering lab in her basement. Bottom line is Science Kids are cool, and after initially being skeptical, Nat pays them a visit and feels inspired after seeing them work. She also reveals that she too was a Science Kid just like them. Do we sense a mentor-ship about to blossom?
April Sexton: April assists Dr Rhodes and Dr Choi with their patients this week. And on a side note, what’s the deal with her and Tate? Are they still together or did they split up? I feel like there’s been no reference to him or their relationship these past couple of episodes.
Dr Sarah Reese: It’s an episode of familiar faces on Med this week, with the return of Danny – the sex-trafficking heroin patient also from two episodes ago. This week’s episode begins with Reese walking to work with boyfriend Joey and feeling like they’re being followed. He laughs it off as her being a Psych resident giving her paranoia, but she later discovers it’s Danny. He’s been having a suicidal thoughts and he doesn’t know what to do. He also doesn’t want to be treated on more official grounds because he’s scared what his masters might do. Reese shares her concerns with Dr Charles, who warns her about getting too involved with a patient and advises her against treating him outside of the hospital. We later learn that he was projecting his own experiences onto her – he used to have his own private practice and grew close to one particular patient until she jumped off a building one night and left a note saying that she was done. Once he realises that Reese is determined to help Danny, he takes her to see P.D‘s Erin Lindsay for “hypothetical” advice. Lindsay tells them it’s going to be tough to crack the ring and they can’t act until Danny is ready to come forward, but once he is, she’ll get the Intelligence team straight on the case. After disagreeing with Reese and walking away, Danny winds back up in the Emergency department, asking for Reese. At first it looks like he was trying to kill himself, but it turns out he had enough and was trying to cut out his tracking chip. A relieved Reese ends up with chip and goes outside, where she throws it into the gutter with a smile. Is it just me, or was that a bad idea? Isn’t it evidence? Shouldn’t she have just handed it over to Lindsay? I’m assuming that she threw it in the gutter so his pimps couldn’t trace him, but surely they could just trace it to the gutter and deduce that he’s back in the hospital? I have a bad feeling about this…
Shout Out of the Week: This week I’m giving it to Chicago P.D.‘s Kim Burgess. I loved her conviction in believing that there was still hope to stop Tay from being transferred out of District 21 (even if there wasn’t in the end) and the way that she realised that she is ready to join Intelligence and had the confidence to ask Voight for a second chance if an opportunity ever popped up again.
Chicago Fire airs Tuesdays at 10/9c, Chicago P.D. airs Wednesdays at 10/9c and Chicago Med airs Thursdays at 9/8c. Chicago Justice will debut mid-season. All four shows air on NBC.
