ONE CHICAGO Women: Chicago P.D. 4×03 & Chicago Med 2×03 recap
This week we delved into the backgrounds of some of our ONE CHICAGO leading ladies and as a result, saw some standout performances on NBC’s Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med. Read on to find out why we were glued to our screens this week…
Trudy Platt: It’s all about Platt this week when walking back to her car after a somewhat tense dinner with her dad (she doesn’t quite approve of his much younger new girlfriend) Platt is attacked and badly beaten. Luckily, she’s alert enough to trigger her car alarm and a neighbor comes rushing out to help her, but Platt’s assailant takes off with her gun. Yes, that’s all he took. Not her handbag or anything. Sounds suss right? Luckily, Intelligence is soon on the case. At first they think it’s someone with a grudge against the tough desk sergeant, because let’s face it – when you are a hard-ass cop, you’re bound to make plenty of enemies. Platt is rushed to Med with a head wound and bleeding eye socket. Thankfully Dr Rhodes is on the case, but that’s unfortunately not as bad as it’s going to get for Platt. The Intelligence team do some digging, which leads them back to her father’s place where he found dead after being attacked and shot. It’s not soon after that they realise it’s Daddy Platt who is the target, not Platt herself. Whilst yes Mr Platt’s much younger girlfriend was taking him for a ride, it is revealed that she (nor her boyfriend) killed him, but rather someone who had previously done business with him and had an axe to grind when Senior Platt’s business fell apart. (Although then we discover that he wasn’t as broke as he lead Trudy to believe and that she has now come into quite a bit of money.) When Burgess reveals to the sergeant Intelligence’s leads on the case, knowing how it all works, Platt breaks herself out of hospital to seek justice herself. She tracks down her father’s killer and next thing you know she has him cuffed and tied to a chair and ready to perform her own interrogation, gun handy just in case. That is until Voight arrives and tries to talk her down. Yes, we see the irony in this, but Voight knows Platt and knows that while she may be taking a page out of his own book when it comes to seeking vengeance, it’s simply not in her nature. In the end she relents and the police take over and Platt is taken back to Med where her much-concerned husband Mouch is waiting for her. I really enjoyed the Platt and Voight scenes this week and the hint that they go quite a bit back. I hope we get to see more scenes with them together.
Erin Lindsay: While it’s been hinted at, this week we get more of a glimpse of how close the young detective is to Platt and the great level of care and respect she has for her. Lindsay and Halstead are the first to arrive at the hospital for Platt, and when Lindsay finds out that Platt’s dad has been murdered, she struggles to break the news to her. On the professional side of things, we also see Lindsay playing it calm and level-headed – she is the one able to ask tough questions like asking Mouch whether it’s possible that Trudy could have been seeing someone else (which by the way, I know he was on a 48-hour shift but I find it hard to believe that Trudy wouldn’t have texted him or mentioned that she was going to have dinner with her dad), and also support Burgess when the young cop feels guilty for going Trudy AWOL after revealing leads to her.
Kim Burgess: In the aftermath of Platt’s attack, Burgess is helping out Intelligence this week, which is a good look on her. She’s obviously taken aback by her frenemyy/mentor’s attack and is quite often at her bedside. One time at which she brings the gruff sergeant’s favorite nuts and also chats to her about how Intelligence is going with the investigation. While Burgess was telling Platt these things to make her feel better, in hindsight it probably wasn’t the best move considering how stubborn Platt can be, which ultimately leads Platt to breaking herself out of hospital and leading her own investigation vigilante-style. We also get a nice short scene with Burgess and Lindsay with the wiser detective trying to ease Burgess’ guilt and taking her out for drinks once the case is solved and Platt is safely back in hospital.
Sharon Goodwin: Since Dr Downey’s death, there have been fewer elective heart surgeries, a concern that Dr Rhodes shares with Sharon. Perhaps he spoke to soon though, because when a patient is admitted to med and has a stroke and Dr Rhodes opts to do a risky surgery, Sharon advises him that the patient is wealthy and has quite a pull with the hospital so bascially in other words, he better not screw this up. Also happening with Rhodes, he is featured in an article about Chicago’s Top 40 Under 40 (Rhodes is #11 FYI) and swears to the chief administrator that he knew nothing about. She’s not mad about it – she’s the one who put his name forward to begin with. The hospital could do with the publicity.
Maggie Lockwood: Not only does the head nurse appear in this week’s Chicago P.D. when Trudy Platt is admitted to Med after her attack, but we FINALLY get a Maggie story in this week’s Chicago Med! Seriously, you have no idea how long I’ve waited to see Maggie get a storyline and for Marlyne Barrett get her chance to sink her teeth into a meaty storyline. The episode kicks off with Maggie at a family reunion (they all have matching t-shirts!) where she has brought Dr Halstead along (I really enjoy the development of their friendship by the way, I feel like she is one of the few people who isn’t afraid to give it to him straight and that he actually respects what she has to say.) Anyway, at this reunion Maggie’s sister Denise shows up. Denise moved to Dallas about a decade ago and rarely comes back to town. It’s obvious that there is some tension between the sisters with Denise constantly making up excuses every time Maggie makes suggestions to hang out. Awkward. As Denise leaves, she crashes her car. Maggie and Dr Halstead rush over to her and it appears she has temporarily gone blind, so it’s off to Med she goes. Dr Halstead asks Denise about her medical history before performing some tests, to which he discovers that Denise has cancer… prostate cancer. Angered that the sisters didn’t reveal this vital piece of information to him, Dr Halstead demands that Maggie tells him the truth, to which she confesses her sister is a transgender. Denise’s diagnosis brings up feelings between the two sisters, resulting in Denise lashing out at Maggie, blaming her for the reason why she rarely comes home to visit, because she feels like Maggie never truly accepted her decision and judges her. Maggie admits that she misses her brother Malcolm but also begs Denise to stay in town to let the family support her during her treatment. Denise agrees.
Dr Natalie Manning: This week Dr Manning and med student Jeff Clarke treat a patient brought in with a mystery illness, but they can’t decipher his medical history and are having trouble diagnosing what it is because the man does not speak English. At first, Dr Manning thinks he has brought in a tropical disease in from his home country, but after consulting with Dr Halstead for advice, she does some sleuthing and deduces that he was riding a roller coaster where there happened to be a measles outbreak. Yes, it’s the measles. Can’t say I would have called that one. Jeff is pretty impressed by Nat’s smart thinking and they’re all smiley and touchy in this episode. Obviously things are going well between them and now people are starting to notice – first April, then Maggie, and heck even their patient has noticed, and through his translating cousin, he tells them he thinks they make a cute couple! It’s only a matter of time before Dr Halstead finds out, but hopefully by then his flirtation with pathologist Nina Shore has turned into something more. 😉
April Sexton: It is April who is the first to notice that Nat and Jeff are totally vibing on each other, but before she can interrogate her friend and grab all the goss, a patient is rushed in. In this episode, April is also concerned about Maggie and offers her support.
Dr Sarah Reese: The psychology resident and Dr Charles treat a patient referred to them by Dr Choi, who appears to be seven months pregnant, but it turns out she is having a hysterical pregnancy. Dr Charles assigns Dr Reese to break the news to the patient and her husband, but she struggles and pretty fumbles her way through it. The patient gets upset that Reese has pretty much told her that she is not right in the head, and then later in the episode Reese awkwardly runs into the patient outside the hospital on her way out. However, this time around Dr Reese’s social skills are slightly improving and she makes a connection with the patient and pretty much a do-over. As socially awkward as Reese can be at times, she’s definitely come a long way since we first met her in the pilot.
Sylvie Brett: Whilst Chicago Fire doesn’t return until next week, Sylvie Brett briefly makes an appearance in this week’s Chicago Med, bringing in a patient. No sign of her regular partner Jimmy Borelli though, as Brett appeared to be working with another paramedic.
Shout Out of the Week: This week, I’m making it a tie between Chicago P.D.‘s Trudy Platt and Chicago Med‘s Maggie Lockwood. It’s about time we learned more about the background of these two characters, and whilst it was unfortunate that it took two tragic events for these reveals to happen, the two characters shone on screen thanks to actors Amy Morton and Marlyne Barrett.
Chicago P.D. air Wednesdays at 10/9c, Chicago Med airs Thursdays at 9/8c, and Chicago Fire airs Tuesdays at 10/9c, returning next week. All three shows air on NBC. Chicago Justice will debut mid-season.
