ONE CHICAGO Women: Chicago P.D. 4×02 & Chicago Med 2×02 recap
Two episodes in of their new seasons and NBC’s Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med are wasting no time in telling heart-pulling stories, demonstrating how strong these leading ladies truly are. Read on to find out what happened with the ONE CHICAGO women this week…
Erin Lindsay: The hunt is on after a young woman goes missing, Intelligence gets straight onto the case (with a warning from Commander Crowley to be on their best behavior as there have been 60 shootings that week in Chicago and 12 have been fatal) with Lindsay kicking ass and taking names as usual, especially after it is revealed that it’s likely the victim has been sexually assaulted. While driving around to gather information, Halstead is casually telling his partner that his loan has been approved and the perks of his new place. When Lindsay doesn’t seem to respond to that, he caves and tells her it’s been a week since he asked her to move in and she hasn’t said anything. She tells him she doesn’t think it’s a good idea… because she wants him to move in with her! She’s already got a mortgage and if they move in together, they can have it paid off in five years. That and you know, she’s completely in love with him. Aww! (Yep, like you Halstead, we also had big goofy grins on our faces when Lindsay said that. I also love that she is the one who said it first! It was also cute when he told her he loved her too later in the ep. <3) At the end of the ep, after rescuing the missing girl and supporting her after her traumatic ordeal, we see Linstead planning changes in “their” living room, playfully bantering before celebrating moving in together. * wink *
Kim Burgess: This week’s ep opens up with Burgess and Tay on patrol on a hot Chicago night. The pair are getting along well, well enough for Burgess to confess to her new partner that she has sworn off men for six months after a relationship within the department, leaving Tay intrigued as to who the ex is. (Haha, loved her comments about Antonio! Speaking of which, I’m sad to hear that Jon Seda will be shifted over to Chicago Justice, but if it means he’ll be getting more storylines I guess I can get onboard with that. We’ll miss you at District 21, Antonio!) Before the ladies can continue their boy talk, they’re off to a call nearby where they try to chase after a suspect and end up losing them, but then Halstead and Atwater drop by (Woohoo #Halwater! Can we please see more of these two together? Don’t get me wrong, I love Linstead but it’s cool to see different dynamics too.) and they soon discover a man badly beaten and his fiance missing. This kicks off this week’s case, as the incident has taken place in a notorious neighborhood where relations between the citizens and police are already strained. It’s all hands on deck for this case, with Tay and Burgess pulled onto overtime to help Voight and his team. It’s here in the foyer that Tay notices a friendly exchange between Burgess and Ruzek and puts two and two together. (Side note, I’d love to see Burgess and Ruzek become friends again. I miss their scenes together. I know the aftermath of a broken engagement is always hard but I think it’d be cool if they could be friends again.) While driving on the streets, someone smashes the windshield of Burgess and Tay’s patrol car (yes, while they were in it!) and Burgess stops and gets out of the car furious. After confronting the locals, they end up getting a lead on the case.
Trudy Platt: The fearless desk sergeant goes head-to-head with Tay’s former boss, Commander Foley, who is demanding that Platt transfer Tay back to him. Platt holds her own and calmly refuses, resulting in him losing his temper and threatening her in front of others at the District. Bad move, buddy! #dontmesswithPlatt
Sharon Goodwin: With his patient fourth on the transplant list and time running out, Dr Rhodes pleads with the Chief Administrator to see if there is anything she can do to get the young baby (yes the patient is a baby, this episode really suckerpunches you with these young patients this week!) moved up on the list. It’s a tough position to be in and while she feels for the doctor who is quite invested in the case, the best she can do is see if a friend of a friend at Gift of Hope can help them.
Maggie Lockwood: Bless Maggie and her ability to tell it like it is. Dr Halstead is struggling financially at the moment and is seeking to find a new roommate and is going through potential roommates from the hospital. (I’ve got to admit, when I first saw him swiping through his phone, I thought he was on a Tinder-esque dating app! Although he probably won’t be needing that any time soon because there are some sparks between him and pathologist Nina Shore – who happens to be played by Colin Donnell aka Dr Rhodes’ real-life wife Patti Murin!) Halstead isn’t impressed with the picks and just wants to find someone like him, which then cues the best line from the ep, delivered by the head nurse: “Oh you mean like a slightly anal, overly stubborn, rule breaking control freak?” Haha! Halstead isn’t the only one Maggie is keeping it real for – when she notices a lack of sparkly on a certain finger of April’s, she points out that it’s been two months since her boyfriend proposed so when is she going to give the poor man an answer. While they are having this conversation, Sarah is not very subtly earvesdropping and Maggie being Maggie calls her over and calls her out on it. #mamabearmaggie
Dr. Natalie Manning: This week opens with Nat and Jeff, picking up the following morning after last week’s ep. As she spots a photo of Jeff and her late husband, instead of being sad, she looks at it fondly and tells Jeff that last night was really great. Good for her, being able to move on. Anyway she has to dash to pick up her son Owen before heading off to work. When she arrives at work, she runs into a mother who’s infant son has been a regular paitent at the hospital for several months now. They chat before Nat gets called away to tend to a new patient. Little do we know, these two stories are going to intertwine in this episode in a complicated way. Her new patient is a three-month-old baby who has just stopped nursing. After running tests, Nat still isn’t sure what the problem is, but then April notices the baby moving in a way that suggests the baby could have a neuro muscular disease and so more tests are run. As the ep goes on, the baby has trouble breathing and as a result, with the lack of oxygen going to the young baby’s brain, they suspect she could be brain-dead. Meanwhile, Dr Rhodes hears of the young patient’s trouble and makes the hard decision to ask Nat to ask the parents if they can test the baby to see if she’s a match with his own patient who is in need of a transplant will likely die before a donor is found. Nat is outraged that Rhodes is putting her in this position as by doing so she is insinuating that there is no hope for their child. Ultimately she asks the parents of her patient, who are distraught that she could ask them such a thing and that she isn’t fighting harder to save their daughter. Yes, it’s pretty awkward. Towards the episode’s end, Dr Manning figures out that her patient doesn’t have some life-threatening illness but rather has been exposed to toxins in soil from the time she’s spent outside in a park, something that can be cured with treatment. The parents are relieved, but for Dr Rhodes and his patient, it’s back to the drawing board. Dr Rhodes has been with his patient since the day he was born so he’s grown pretty attached and doesn’t know how Nat does it everyday, working with young babies and kids, especially the babies who may not make it. She tells him on bad days she asks her mother-in-law to look after her son for a few extra hours so she can decompress and settle before she returns home. It’s something she is doing in this episode, showing up to Jeff’s as the episode closes.
April Sexton: This week we see April assist Dr Halstead with a homeless man who has fallen but also appears to be having brain-related issues, and also assists Dr Manning with her young patient.
Dr Sarah Reese: The psychology residency has brought out a new light in the new doctor. She’s super excited about all the new things she’s learning, especially all the different syndromes. Maybe a little bit too excited as she starts to analyse everyone around her, including her socially awkward boyfriend Joey, who she deduces to have “avoidant personality disorder” after listening to him talk about how uncomfortable he feels around the new pathology resident. Reese also earvesdrops on Maggie and April’s conversation and when Maggie calls her over, the young doctor begins shrinking April. The two nurses laugh her off, with April declaring that three weeks in her psychology residency and she already thinks she’s Freud. Dr Reese ends up finding Dr Charles and cries that he’s created a monster by recruiting her to Psych. Now that she knows all the buzzwords, it’s become an impulsive reaction to analyse everyone around her to the point where she thinks she herself could have a bordeline personality disorder. He laughs her off and tells her that he was just like her during his first year and that the trick is to think less and listen more and she’ll be fine.
Shout Out of the Week: This week I’m giving it to Chicago Med‘s Dr Natalie Manning, who was caught in a pretty tough situation this week when the lives of her patient’s and Dr Rhodes’ became intertwined. As Nat pointed out “As a doctor you want to do everything in your power to save your patient, and I am. But it’s just now, if I save my patient it means yours won’t make it.” I wouldn’t wish that sort of decision on anybody.
Chicago P.D. air Wednesdays at 10/9c, Chicago Med airs Thursdays at 9/8c, and Chicago Fire airs Tuesdays at 10/9c, returning October 11. All three shows air on NBC. Chicago Justice will debut mid-season.
