ONE CHICAGO Women: Chicago Med 1×17, Chicago Fire 4×22 & Chicago P.D. 3×21 recap
A surprising job offer, a death and the introduction of Chicago Justice, it was a busy week last week in the ONE CHICAGO world. Read on to find out what was going on with the leading ladies of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.…
Sharon Goodwin: With one of her friends in town, Sharon is trying to convince Dr Daniel Charles to have dinner with her, her husband and her friend. Sensing a set up, Dr Charles rebuffs Sharon’s invite, but at the end of the episode reconsiders after a case. Also in this episode, it’s a case of once a nurse, always a nurse, with Sharon secretly slipping a patient some alcohol to ease his pain, an act that Dr Will Halstead had an issue with when nurse April Sexton tried to do it, but he obviously can’t make a fuss about it when it’s the boss.
April Sexton: This week April clashes with Dr Will Halstead when an alcoholic homeless man is brought in. He’s a familiar face to April and in so much pain that April just wants to give him some alcohol to make him feel better, but Will is against it and warns April not to do it. When the patient is later coughing up blood, it’s clear that April does not agree with Will’s methods.
Dr Natalie Manning: During shift Nat realises her wedding ring is no longer on her hand and goes into a panic, so much of a panic that she collapses. When she comes to in a hospital bed, she’s not impressed that Will and Maggie want to run some tests on her. Lucky they do because it’s revealed that Nat basically has broken heart syndrome triggered by her grieving and extreme feelings over betraying her late husband, Jeff. Thankfully it’s something that is treatable but her mother-in-law tells her that perhaps it’s a sign that Nat needs to start letting go of Jeff. At the end of the episode, we see Nat take the first step and she buries her newly found wedding ring at her husband’s grave site. Also in this episode, Will reveals to Natalie he’s been offered a job in California and after seeing that she is still mourning Jeff, we see Will not only avoid seeing her at the end of the episode, but also make a call to the hospital in California. Will he take the job?
Maggie Lockwood: It’s actually Maggie who notices that Natalie’s wedding ring is no longer on her finger. Before Nat can go into full panic mode, Maggie leaps into action to find it, instructing everyone in the ED that every nook and cranny is to be checked and that no garbage or sheets are to be taken out of the ED until she checks them. Like a pro, Maggie finds the ring caught in a linen bag caught on a fitted sheet.
Sarah Reese: Sarah is assisting Dr Charles with a case where two elderly women from the same nursing home are brought in with the same symptoms but they can’t figure out the cause. When Dr Charles realises it could be a sexually transmitted infection, Sarah is horrified at the thought of old people still having sex despite Dr Charles telling her it’s completely normal or them to still be doing so.
Gabriela Dawson: Undeterred by being told it can take months to be approved as a foster parent, Gabriela’s quest to foster Louie continues this week. She gives Boden the heads up and asks him to write a letter of recommendation, as well as asking her brother Antonio (from Chicago PD) to expedite the background check. Both agree, but Antonio also gives Casey a piece of his mind when he realises his sister plans to take care of Louie on her own. He warns Casey that he needs to step up and make a gesture. Boden also has a word to Casey, hinting that he should use his position as alderman to help Gabriela’s case. Next thing you know, Gabriela gets a meeting with Child Services but it’s too late, Louie has already been placed with a foster family. Although upset, Gabriela just wants him to be happy. But it may not be too late for Gabriela – she later receives a phone call from the children’s shelter and it turns out Louie has been brought back after acting out biting the other kids in his new foster home. Gabriela goes to see him and comfort him and while the woman tells her she still has a chance with Louie, she also lets it slip that Casey put in a good word for her, which surprises Gabriela.
Sylvie Brett: When Firehouse 51 are called to the scene of a car accident where they realise that a pair of wasted parents let their young daughter drive instead of driving drunk, while on the scene and tending to the young girl, Brett realises the daughter has a broken rib and punctured lung and it’s a sad scene to watch the young girl lose consciousness.
Kim Burgess: Burgess is the centre of attention in this week’s ep, which acts as a backdoor pilot for the upcoming Chicago Justice. The action kicks off with Burgess and Roman enjoying a flirty moment in the patrol car while on shift when suddenly they are shot at. Burgess is fine but Roman has been hit and urges her to go after the culprit. She chases after the shooter but loses him for a moment, only for him to reappear and then she shoots him til he falls. When the (other) police arrive, the shooter’s gun can’t be found and it looks like Burgess has paralysed a black 17-year-old honor roll student, causing outrage among the community. Assistant State Attorney Peter Stone, who happens to be the same man that sent Voight to prison, is called in to help defend Burgess. Things get pretty intense in this episode (not to mention awkward when hers and Roman’s new relationship is revealed) and thankfully the shooter is revealed to actually be the shooter, but that’s not before Burgess is relieved of her duties. We assume all will be rectified this week, fingers crossed!
Erin Lindsay: Along with the rest of the Intelligence team, Lindsay works to help clear Burgess’ name, starting with questioning the parents of the young man who was shot and then his ex-girlfriend. Although she doesn’t say much, we see Lindsay support Burgess through the trial, from being in the car with Burgess before she arrives to take the stand and also at her apartment while she’s being questioned by the State Attorney’s office.
Trudy Platt: Although we see her show her support to Burgess by driving her to the trial, Platt is put in an awkward position when she has to relieve Burgess of her duties while the investigation takes place. As she does, you can see this is not something Platt wants to do. We’re sure Platt will be fighting for Burgess to be reinstated next episode! Platt actually helps the State Attorney’s office steer the case in Burgess’ favour when she reveals to ASA Stone that the shooter’s uncle was arrested six years ago and she was on duty at the time and admits that the arresting officer was a racist, and therefore this piece of information establishes the motive that the SA office has been looking for.
