5 Reasons We Love the Women of Good Witch

By  |

Back in 2008, the very first The Good Witch movie debuted on the Hallmark Channel, starring Catherine Bell (JAG and Army Wives) as Cassie Nightingale, the mysterious new resident of the charming little town of Middleton.

Each year since then a new The Good Witch movie has aired, chronicling Cassie’s life as she begins a relationship and eventually marries town Sheriff Jake Russell (former co-star Chris Potter); opens the legendary Grey House as a bed and breakfast as well as opening an eclectic store in town and helping to raise Jake’s pre-teen children Brandon and Lori.

After seven consecutive movies, the Hallmark Channel decided to launch a weekly series – Good Witch – that followed Cassie’s life with her now grown daughter Grace and many of the residents of Middleton.

With the second season premiere episode set to air this Sunday, it seemed like a great time to focus on the five reasons we love the women of Good Witch:

1. Magical – Sure, the residents of Middleton have believed from the very beginning that Cassie Nightingale is a witch; and while that may be true, it’s Cassie magical charm that has bewitched the residents and viewers alike.

2. Offbeat – Martha Tisdale (cast member Catherine Disher) started out as a nemesis to Cassie, wanting to run Cassie out of Middleton because of her witch-like qualities, but over the years they have become friends; and while Martha is a bit over-the-top most of the time, she really is well-meaning.

3. Sweet – Viewers of the Good Witch franchise were first introduced to Grace Russell (series regular Bailee Madison) when she was a newborn in The Good Witch’s Charm and then we saw her as a little girl in The Good Witch’s Wonder; but it was as a teenager that we got to see just how sweet young Grace is and just how very much like her mother she is.

4. Supportive – It’s always good to have someone supportive in your life and these ladies – Lori (recurring guest star Hannah Endicott-Douglas), Stephanie (recurring guest star Kylee Evans) and Tara (recurring guest star Ashley Leggat) – aren’t just supporting members of the cast, but their characters are supportive of their family, friends and husband [in that order].

5. Troublemakers – No TV series – no matter how saccharine sweet it is (like Good Witch) – has to have a troublemaker (or two). In the town of Middleton that title falls to Cassie’s witchy (albeit somewhat well-meaning) cousin Abigail Pershing (recurring guest star Sarah Power) and new town doctor Sam Radford’s ex-wife Linda (recurring guest star Gabrielle Miller). Both have caused their fair share of trouble for Cassie and Sam (among others).

Good Witch will air its second season premiere on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, April 17 at 9/8c.
