ONE CHICAGO Women: Chicago Med 1×09, 1×10, Chicago Fire 4×14, 4×15, & Chicago P.D. 3×14 & 3×15 recap
Partner swapping, friendships tested and a crossover – it’s been a busy two weeks in the ONE CHICAGO world. Here’s what you’ve missed with the women of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D..
Sharon Goodwin: When Dr Will Halstead goes against a patient’s DNR, he’s lucky that Sharon didn’t suspend him, especially when the patient decides to sue the hospital. In an attempt to get a handle on things, she removes Dr Halstead off the case and replaces him with Dr Manning. The following week, Sharon not only warns Will that he is to be on his best behaviour, but she’s also the voice of reason to Nat, who wants to change shifts after clashing with the impulsive male doctor once again. If that wasn’t enough for her to handle, when Dr Downey is brought in after getting into a car accident, Sharon has to reveal that he has a terminal illness and that Dr Rhodes was brought in to be his protege and ultimately take over Dr Downey’s position once he passes.
April Sexton: April assists Sarah when a homeless man with lice is brought in. The newbie has never encountered anything like it, so April shows the young med student the ropes. April also gets caught up in the DNR drama with Dr Halstead and Dr Manning. In the following episode, April and Maggie try to sway Sarah to stay on at Med for her residency.
Dr. Natalie Manning: When a cancer patient with a DNR is brought into Med, clouded by his own personal experiences Dr Halstead ignores her wishes and not only tries to get her into a clinical trial, but also resuscitates her when she flatlines despite Nat’s protests not to, it causes tension between the two doctors to say the very least. In fact, Dr Halstead even goes as far to accuse Nat of letting down the patient despite the fact that she was the one who was listening to what the patient wanted. Disgusted with Will’s actions, Nat goes to see Sharon, who is also less than impressed with how he handled things, especially when it turns into a lawsuit against the hospital. Nat is angry with how Will always seems to dismiss her opinions and gives him a piece of her mind. I have to say she is right – go watch previous episodes and you could probably start a drinking game with the number of times Halstead has gone against her or disagreed with her opinions. So good on her for speaking her mind! In the following episode, things are still tense between them and Nat is keeping a watchful eye on him. When a patient they are looking after dies, Will lashes out and blames Nat for giving the wrong treatment. This is the last straw for Nat, and she goes to Sharon and requests not to work with Dr Halstead any longer. Will later apologises and when Nat tells him that she is confused about why he treats her the way he does, he tells her “don’t you know?” before finally making his move and kissing her. What the fallout will be from this is anyone’s guess – bring on the next episode!
Maggie Lockwood: Patient Satisfaction Surveys are introduced into the hospital, so it’s up to the head nurse to remind everyone to get the patients to fill them in before they are discharged. In the following episode, Maggie and April are ‘helping’ Sarah decide what she’s going to do for her residency and hope that she’ll continue in the Emergency Department at Med. They’re pretty disappointed when she decides to go back to pathology. Although, something tells me that decision may not be so set in stone…
Sarah Reese: Over the last few weeks we’ve seen the med student come into her own – she’s definitely come a long way from the bumbling intern we first met in the pilot. She’s still working on her people skills but when she is assigned to take care of a homeless man with lice, you can see that there’s something about him that she feels drawn to and she takes extra care with him and even lets him stay a little bit longer than he’s supposed to.
Unfortunately he passes away before he is discharged, but not before he fills out a Patient Satisfaction Survey where he gives Sarah top marks in care for him. In the following episode, the med student is struggling to decide what she wants to do for her residency and time is ticking. Maggie and April think she’s a great fit at the emergency department at Med and try to make their case to her. As she diagnoses and connects with a young hockey player, you can see that she is seriously considering it, but when that patient in the end disregards her advice, a disheartened Sarah decides to stick to original choice, Pathology.
Gabriela Dawson: Dawson has been coaching Jimmy for the Battle of the Badges match, one that the rest of the Firehouse apart from Herrmann, don’t think he will win. While he had a good coach and fought a good fight, Jimmy was no match for Gabriela’s brother, Antonio. Also affecting Dawson, a local resident has approached Casey, wanting him to run for alderman. Being the supportive girlfriend that she is, Dawson tells Casey that she will go with whatever decision he decides to make. However, as the episode goes on, Dawson realises that the people need Casey and she tells him so – with a bit of a Valentines’ themed incentive if you know what I mean. In the following episode, due to another Firehouse being closed down, one of their members is joining Truck 81. When we finally meet the mysterious new member, it turns out to be a friend of Dawson’s – Stella Kidd. The two were in training together and got on so well that they had to be separated. I’m excited to see Dawson interact with another female more closely. Brett is great, but there’s more of an established history between Dawson and Kidd and it’s always fun to see two strong and confident females being able to work together without any tension between them.
Sylvie Brett: With Chili still acting out, Brett has realised that there is only so much that she can do to help her partner and when Chili’s actions result in Brett having to have a new partner and first up is Rodney Ogle, whose nickname is “The Bitter End” and let’s just leave it at that. Between that and finding out that Jimmy is being bumped from Truck and will have to find a new firehouse, Brett is pretty worked up and frustrated. So much so that she ends up blurting out to Jimmy that she’s sad to see him leave because she’s had a crush on him since he arrived at Firehouse 51 and who knows what could have happened between them. When Boden figures out how to keep Jimmy at Firehouse 51…as the new paramedic, it makes things a little awkward for Sylvie. But Jimmy being the cool guy that he is, agrees to put her confession behind them and pretend that it never happened. With this latest revelation, I can now say that I wished the show never put Jimmy and Chili together because I would totally be on board the Jimmy and Sylvie train, but if that were to happen now, the history between those three characters would just make it weird.
Jessica ‘Chili’ Chilton: Hands up those of you who thought the shooting situation was going to be the wake up call that Chili needed to get her life back on track? Yeah, so did I. Not only does Boden need to have words with her yet again, but even Severide is getting on the bandwagon and voicing his concerns to her because her constant runs to her car during shift to have a drink and then covering it up with gum is not as discreet as she thinks it is. When she struggles to intubate a victim while on the job, it’s the last straw and Boden tells her that while she will always have a family at 51, he has to fire her. Chili doesn’t take to this too kindly and when the rest of the Firehouse try to give her support, she lashes out and tells them that they’re not her family, before storming out. After some time home alone and a sweet gesture of Herrmann leaving a framed photo of the team outside her door, Chili realises that she needs help and call Severide, who drives her to a rehab center and promises that her friends at 51 will be there to support her when she gets out.
Erin Lindsay: When Chicago P.D. crosses over with Law & Order: SVU it’s usually for a seriously messed up case, and Gregory Yates, AKA Nadia’s killer, escaping from his upstate New York prison ticks those boxes. In Law & Order: SVU, we see Lindsay travel to New York with fellow detective Dawson to help Lieutenant Olivia Benson and her team try and track Yates down and figure out his next move. Lindsay nearly has him, only for him to narrowly escape her, but not before leaving her a taunting note that he’ll see her in Chicago. Once Dawson and Lindsay are back in Chicago, it isn’t long before Yates is taunting the Intelligence team with a triple homicide. With Yates clearly out for her, Voight commands Lindsay to stay at the station despite her protests that she should be used as bait to draw the sociopath out. The episode is a dangerous on-edge game of cat and mouse, especially since Yates has managed to hijack Lindsay’s phone with spyware, but ultimately ends with the female detective shooting him dead. In the following episode, Lindsay convinces Voight to let Burgess in on their latest case and have the beat cop ride along with her. As you know, I am a fan of finally seeing these two female cops getting screen time together and even better, getting to work together. Not only was Lindsay supporting Burgess professionally, but also personally and I loved seeing the two, along with Fire‘s Sylvie Brett and Med‘s Sarah Reese sitting at Molly’s having a girl’s night out together at the end of the last ep.
Kim Burgess: In last week’s ep, while on sobriety checkpoint duty, Burgess busts a college professor with a large amount of heroin. As it is a major score and Burgess was the one who discovered it, Detective Lindsay thinks that it is only right that Burgess gets to see the case through to the end and brings her up to Intelligence for the duration of the case. That also means that Kim is now in close proximity of her ex fiance Ruzek, but our girl is a trooper and tries to be as professional as she can about it.
Trudy Platt: Last week’s episode had one of my favourite storylines – Sgt Platt helping train Officer Roman to be a field training officer by pretending to be a fresh and idealistic officer. It was hilarious seeing not only Platt as this bubbly and eager to please character but also the two cops trying and one up each other as they went for a ride. Roman is smarter than he looks but in the end not as smart as Platt – he’s still got a lot to learn from her, but as long as he continues to accept her guidance we’re sure he’ll be on his way to becoming a field training officer.
