Discussion
1. I don’t think any of us were surprised that Joanna didn’t kill Luke. Do you think she is completely lost in blood lust and hate or do you think Luke’s transition changes everything?
Mel: I want to believe that Luke being an Evo changes things for Joanna, but they still haven’t developed her character enough for me to see beyond the bloodlust and hate.
Rueben: I wasn’t surprised that she didn’t kill Luke, but given the look on her face as she walked away from him, well, I have to wonder if her bloodlust will get the better of her, turning into even more madness (if that’s possible) and she’ll make an attempt in the future? I think even his transition will change her in anyway, she’s too far gone in my opinion.
Liz: I think the loss of her only child put her over the edge and all the killing cut the rope. It will be interesting to see what she does now that she’s split from Luke. I could see her teaming up with that guy that shot the priest and his gang.
2. Why do you think Luke’s evolution is just now manifesting itself?
Mel: Because it’s more dramatic to have his power revealed now? But seriously, my guess is that being in proximity with so many Evos over the past year has something to do with it. Possibly even in killing them, their powers somehow started activating his like when Sylar stole other Evos’ powers. Noah even referenced Sylar in this episode.
Rueben: I have to agree with Melissa. I think it’s just manifesting now because of being around the Evo’s, as if he is a sponge like Sylar. Nice Easter egg to slip him in there too. Plus, like Melissa said, it adds to the dramatic effect.
Liz: I think it’s tied to what is happening in the atmosphere that Malina is trying to control. It seemed to me that when she was shown to be having more of a struggle containing whatever is happening, that’s when Luke started showing signs of evolving. I don’t think he’s absorbing other Evos’ powers. What is happening to him is directly connected with the sun. Like that’s what his power is – the power of the sun.
3. We came a bit closer to Erica’s motives for rounding up Evos. She’s after something very specific. What do you think it is?
Mel: Molly said Erica was going to “kill 7 billion people”, but Erica said she was trying to save the world…I’m curious as to which one is correct. Or if both are. It sounds like Erica is trying to find whoever that super creepy kid was at the end in order harness his/her power for her endgame.
Rueben: I’m really clueless as to what she’s after, but it’s clearly not good. Just seeing those Evo’s harnessed like that was chilling; and whatever her plans are that would cost the lives of “7 billion people”, well, that’s just beyond disturbing. I believe it all hinges on that “shadow” kid at the end.
Liz: I’m going to take my thoughts from her conversation with her daughter. I think she is the new Sylar, only like Noah said, she’s found a way to extract powers in a more advanced way. However, I don’t believe that she’s doing it to save the future for her daughter. She wants something else and I think it may just be power, but she may know something more than what we heard in this episode. Whatever she’s after, she’s using Evos, including the Shadow, to find it. That’s what she really wanted Molly for.
4. Molly told Noah to “save the future”. Do you think she is referring to the danger that Malina is being trained to prevent or Erica’s end game? Do you think the two events are connected?
Mel: I think the two are connected. Now that we’ve met Malina’s counterpart in that dark figure at the end, I can see the impending apocalypse. We have the light (Malina) and the dark (creepy kid), and their inevitable clash is going to be devastating.
Rueben: I think the two are connected, I’m just not sure how. But it is clear that Tommy is going to be an important component of what’s coming as much as Malina. I’m almost afraid to learn what Erica’s end game is, though.
Liz: I think the two are connected as well, but it remains to be seen if one is the result or cause of the other. It could be that Erica knows nothing about what’s coming, as Farah told Malina. Hard to say more.
5. What moments stood out for you in this episode, and why?
Mel: Molly’s suicide. I did not see that coming!
Rueben: I liked Tommy saving his mom by transporting her to the hospital; and then his taking the chance with his blood sample knowing he would probably get caught. And while her storyline isn’t my favorite, I did like seeing all the cosplayers encounter Katana Girl/Miko for the first time in front of the Renatus building. Just a cool Comic Con like moment, ya know?
Liz: When Joanna shot that man in the first moments of the episode, she was so cold and soulless about it. But when that dog came down and laid by his master and whimpered, I was a puddle of mess. Apparantly, it affected Luke too. Molly’s suicide was shocking to me too. I feel like she was kind of wasted on this show. Miko and Ren going to the same place that Noah and Quentin are is making things more interesting too, in the sense that slowly, the key characters are coming together. I really liked the camera shots of them all during the sky lights show. Did we just find out exactly who will be the ones to save the world?
