Losing TV Shows Is Hard
It happens every season, television shows are cancelled. Whether they are long-running dramas that come to a planned ending (such as Burn Notice, Lost or CSI just to name a few) or any TV show that simply didn’t get a chance to run for very long (such as Moonlight, Firefly or Pushing Daisies). There are plenty of short-lived series that have come and gone all too soon for their fans, leaving a deep ache in the hearts of those who welcomed that particular show into their homes.
This season has seen its fair share of cancellations, again, some that have been planned like Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire and Justified; while others basically had the rug pulled out from under them.
Here are just a few of the over 130 cancellations (reality, comedy and drama) that were announced this year:
Atlantis – This BBC America fantasy series was loosely based on the story of Jason and the Argonauts, running for two seasons. This hour-long drama may have lacked good CGI, but it was a good guilty pleasure series.
Chasing Life – Based on the Mexican series Terminales, this ABC Family drama only lasted for two seasons, following the life of an aspiring journalist who is diagnosed with cancer, turning her world upside down. In my opinion, this was one of the most under-appreciated shows of the year.
Forever – This ABC drama ran for only one season (22 episodes), following the unique life of Doctor Henry Morgan, New York City’s star medical examiner, who has a big secret: he is Immortal. This was a good addition to the primetime line-up, but the network pulled it primarily due to low ratings.
Hart of Dixie – This dramedy about New York City doctor Zoe Hart who ends up practicing medicine in the small town of Bluebell, Alabama was on the air, via The CW, for four seasons. Unlike the other shows on this list, this series did have a chance to build-up an audience, airing 76 episodes in total. But the show’s cancellation was hard for the fans as it came unexpectedly.
Hindsight – This is yet another show that lasted only one season, despite receiving a second season order by VH1 that was later rescinded by the network (that’s what can happen when the network’s management changes). The drama focused on Becca, who ended up traveling back 20 years in time to relive her first marriage on the eve of her second. Thanks for the cliffhanger ending with no resolution, VH1.
