VIKINGS – 2.02 ‘Invasion’ The Scheming of Men.

Time has changed and we are now four years in the future. Aslaug is still pregnant, but with her third child. Ragnar’s been a busy boy. The princess just might receive a dose of her own poison when someone else catches Ragnar’s eye. Aslaug is less than pleased and threatens him with a prophesy regarding his unborn child. Ragnar is concerned about this enough to consult the Seer who confirms for him the fate of his offspring which left the Northman more questions than answers.

Athelstan is much changed while Floki appears the same. Floki is still building boats and the question is raised when a Westward Raid will happen. Ragnar announces their return to England along with King Horlick and Jarl Borg. Scheming never ends with such strong personalities and Horlick refuses to allow Jarl to accompany them, but asks Ragnar to be the bad guy in delivering the news. It is not well received. Jarl takes his offense to Rollo and speaks of more treachery. Rollo will hear none of it leaving Jarl to his own devices.

Rollo has descended into a hell of his own making. Siggy encourages him to obtain Ragnar’s favor thereby allowing him to attend the raid. Rollo is accepted back however, he is denied the privilege of raiding. I’ve a feeling Ragnar may live to regret that decision. Siggy makes a play of her own and meets with King Horlick to reveal information she has regarding Ragnar. She is in a tough position without much support from Rollo. Who can blame her from making a bargain with Horlick? I’m not so sure that the terms of their “understanding'” will be to her benefit.

Ragnar faces off with Athelstan who has become quite a fierce warrior. Ragnar asks him to accompany them on the raid, but also delivers him a waring. “It is one thing to use a weapon. Another to kill. Never hesitate.” The party departs and reaches land, however misfortune befalls causing some ships to be lost along the way. Athelstan proves his worth when the battle is engaged saving Ragnars life. Unfortunatley, they soon discover their dreams of easy pickings dissolve quickly when it is revealed they have arrived in Wessex.
Has Ragnar met his match in King Ecbert?
