Women Behind the Scenes Spotlight: Barbara Hall

Barbara HallToday’s Women Behind the Scenes spotlight is focused on writer, producer and series creator Barbara Hall.

Barbara was born in Chatham, Virginia and eventually graduated with a BA in English from James Madison University. Shortly after her graduation she became a writer on the classic comedy Family Ties and a story editor and writer on another classic comedy: Newhart

In the last 1980’s she was a writer on the short-lived series A Year in the Life as well as a writer and co-producer on Moonlighting. A few seasons later she was a writer and co-executive producer on the acclaimed series I’ll Fly Away and was a writer, creative consultant and consulting producer on the fan favorite series Northern Exposure.

During the mid-1990’s, she worked as a part of the crew on ER and Chicago Hope. It was in 1999 that she reached a peak in her career by being an executive producer, writer and developer on the hit CBS series Judging Amy. It was also during this time that she worked as an executive producer and creator of the acclaimed series Joan of Arcadia.

In the mid-2000’s, she served as a writer on the short-lived drama Women’s Murder Club; a consulting producer and writer on Army Wives and a writer and co-executive producer on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Over the last few seasons, she has served as a writer and executive producer on the Lifetime mini-series Marry Me and a co-executive producer and writer on the acclaimed and award-winning drama Homeland.

But television isn’t Barbara’s only interest as she is also a founding member of the alternative country rock band known as The Enablers, who have released two CDs: “The First Seven Songs” released in 2003 and “Come Back Soon” in 2004. In 2005, she released her solo debut CD entitled “Handsome” and her latest album “Bad Man” was released in 2013.

Using her favorite online handle, Rueben is an East Coast-bred gal who is now a permanent Californian and a lifelong tv-oholic. She watches at least 25 TV shows a week, goes to the movies as often as possible, listens to music every waking moment, reads every day and “plays” on the internet every chance she can. Some of her current favorite TV shows are Outlander, Sweet Magnolias, Wednesday, The Mandalorian, The Equalizer, Fire Country, Miss Scarlet, Hudson & Rex, SkyMed, The Rookie, Bridgerton, Cobra Kai, Virgin River, The Witcher, Leverage: Redemption and School Spirits. She is looking forward to the fall TV season, including the return of Outlander, Tracker and The Equalizer and the debuts of the new dramas Matlock, Murder In a Small Town, NCIS: Origins and Cross.
