NEW GIRL Recap: Sister
This was one of those everyone is doing their own thing New Girl episodes so let’s recap it that way shall we?
Jess & her sister Abby
Jess has a sister, an always in trouble, black sheep of the family sister. Jess’s Mom calls asking her to go to San Diego and get Abby out of jail and put her on a plane back to Oregon. Side Note: I love Jamie Lee Curtis. I don’t always love New Girl but there is nothing you can say about their casting. It’s awesome.
Anyway, Jess agrees to go get Abby. She is less than agreeable though when Nick wants to meet Abby. Jess makes up some excuse and says maybe they can have dinner before Abby gets on the plane.
Jess goes to San Diego, gets Abby, played by Linda Cardellini. What did I just say about great casting? Abby wants to meet Nick but Jess says he is busy. Jess and Abby stop by the loft for a few drinks before going to the airport and they are getting along until Abby sees a text from Cece asking if Abby has ruined everything yet. Abby takes off when Jess is in the other room forcing Jess to go after her. She finally tracks her down at a hotel bar and gets her to the airport.
Schmidt and Nick
Schmidt needs Nick to attend a bar mitzvah with him and act as his wingman. Apparently Nick is the best wingman the world has ever seen. Cue a little montage of Nick doing his wingman thing quite effectively. When they get to the bar mitzvah Schmidt says it is Nick’s job to distract the Rabbi while Schmidt charms his daughter. The Rabbi doesn’t like Schmidt so Nick will have to keep him occupied.
It’s all going fine until Nick gets a call from Jess; this distracts him just long enough for the Rabbi, played by Jon Lovitz by the way, to see what Schmidt is up to. He rushes over there to stop Schmidt. This prompts an all-out yelling match that ends with Rachel (the Rabbi’s daughter) pointing at Schmidt and yelling, “I love sex and he wants to have sex with me.”
Nick finds Schmidt at the bar to apologize for being sidetracked. He thinks Jess doesn’t want him to meet Abby because she is embarrassed by him. He’s a little disheartened but then he remembers he is the best wingman ever and he and Schmidt hatch a new plan.
Nick will be an embarrassment and Schmidt will save the bar mitzvah by knocking Nick out, with a stage punch of course. I mean Schmidt did a few productions of West Side Story so we’re all good there.
I’m not sure I can put in words how completely terrifying Nick’s attempt to cause a scene is. Even Schmidt looks concerned and he is the one that came up with that despicable sex position called The Captain when he was trying to break Nick and Jess up.
Unfortunately for Nick, Schmidt doesn’t get to his side in time, another patron does. Nick goes down hard after that punch while Schmidt stand by looking shocked.
Nick gets home with a black eye and is telling Jess he knows he is embarrassing while Jess tries to interrupt. She however is interrupted by Schmidt who tells Jess Nick is pretty much a God among men. Jess is confused as it is her sister she was embarrassed by, not Nick.
Abby comes out from Jess’s room, she is staying with them for a few weeks, maybe a month, okay maybe six months. Nick thinks Abby is delightful, I’m sure it has something to do with the blow he took to the head.
Winston, Birdie, Coach & Cece
Birdie is throwing a dinner party at her place and everyone is invited. Believe me it is as fun as it sounds, she is making 10+ soups, all cream based. By the end of the episode only Cece and Coach end up being able to make it to dinner.
At the most awkward dinner party in history Cece, Coach, Winston and Birdie sip soup. Cece and Coach break the ice by having a fight. Yeah, it’s really not awkward now. Coach is still upset Cece never text him back after their one disaster of a date. The fight leads to some making out by Coach and Cece. It doesn’t go as well as it did last time. It is awful, completely terrible. Coach says Cece was right not to text him back. Cece thinks they should be friends now. He agrees.
I have to admit that I’m disappointed there wasn’t more of the dinner party. That would have been the best part as far as I am concerned.
