COMMUNITY: Herstory of Dance [Recap]

By  |

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve seen the Greendale Seven and in that time, it seems that Pierce has started to watch Inspector Spacetime, though the American version – which Abed says is a bastardized version of the show. Just as Pierce finishes with his thoughts on the finale (way to spoil it for the rest of them), Dean Pelton walks in, dressed as Donna Reed, and announces a Sadie Hawkins dance.

Britta, as usual, is offended by the Dean’s use of a Sadie Hawkins theme, and is now determined to have a Sophie B Hawkins dance on the same day. Jeff and Britta fight over how likely Britta will Britta this, which only makes Britta try harder to plan this dance.

Annie and Shirley, meanwhile, want to each set Abed up on a blind-date, and that idea only seems to be horrible. Annie’s first girl is far too quirky, even for Abed, if only because that girl asked him out via a balloon. Shirley mentions her friend and Abed says yes to her as well. Now Abed’s got two dates and will have hijinxs for the whole night now.

Chang’s Changnesia as a bit is going to get old quickly, but I still want to watch it.

Abed’s plan for two dates in one night is going to fail, but I still want to watch it. The first time with Jessica is just slightly forced and Kat is so out in left-field that I can’t even tell. The woman working the coat room is now onto Abed’s plan and bringing in a fourth person can’t make this any better.

Has anyone ever wondered if Dean Pelton is Jewish? He’s really good at guilt trips, I have to say.

At least Annie and Shirley realize that Abed went on both dates, and just as he’s about to go tell Jessica how much he likes her, he has a moment with the coatcheck girl, Rachel. Too bad she left the dance just as Abed was about to make his declaration.

There’s got to be a point for Abed where he realizes that his constant reliance on TV Tropes is not good for anyone in his social circle. When Troy couldn’t convince Abed to help plan Britta’s dance, there was already one instance, and now with Rachel leaving, there’s another. Annie and Shirley as Abed’s voice of reason makes up for their failed attempts at human interaction for him, though.

So how did Sophie B Hawkins actually show up at this dance? Was that Pierce or someone else? But “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” doesn’t quite sound right after all these years. Where’s my 90s love gone?

Abed’s getting the girl, in the end, and without all the tropes and pretense.

Jeff even has a moment of emotional maturity and tells Britta how great her dance was. All these Jeff and Britta moments are making me really worry about Britta and Troy together, but maybe I’m reading far too much subtext into each of their scenes (and this from someone who doesn’t even really ship them).

Is this tag really the preview for next week? Do we get the puppets so soon? If so, oh yes!

Despite her better judgment, she enjoys shows about the shallow sides of her home city, but will also find time to watch iZombie, Jane the Virgin, and much more.
