REVOLUTION: Eric Kripke Discusses Season 1 Plans {Spoilers}
There are some shows that I watch because I love the mystery, suspense and intrigue. I love trying to work out what the writers are intending and trying to solve the puzzles they’ve given us. But there comes a time when a show just keeps on giving us pieces without any resolution at all. Then I get bored. I lose interest entirely. Why should I try to figure anything out when the showrunners aren’t willing to throw me a bone now and then?
Eric Kripke knows how to engage an audience and keep them. He successfully drew in a large audience with the pilot for “Supernatural”. He held on to us for five seasons. What was the trick? He solved the mysteries for us while at the same time opening up another, fresh puzzle for us to work on. This is what kept me watching Supernatural. In short, Kripke respects his audience. He’s one of us.
When I learned that he was helming Revolution, without even knowing what the show was going to be about, I was on board. It’s simple, really. I want more puzzles with answers and I know Kripke will give them to me. I was right.
In a recent interview with Zap2It, Eric Kripke reveals his strategy for season of Revolution. “You should look for clues everywhere,” Kripke teases. “There was a phenomenon that we have up our sleeves as to what caused the blackout. What you see in that globe shot [of the blackout creeping across the Earth] is an accurate representation of what we’re working on. Currently, in the writers room, we’re talking dangerously about revealing that secret before the end of the first season.” See what I mean? Give us some satisfaction mixed with new questions to mull over.
“The longer you drag out an answer the more pressure there is that it’s the greatest answer given in the history of man,” Kripke explains. “Frankly, I’m not that smart. I’d rather answer a question and open a door to a bigger room. Even if we do answer the question of what caused the blackout it leads directly to a bigger and scarier mystery.”
Kripke plans on ending the search for Danny very soon. He’s not going to drag that out. However, finding Danny may lead to something else. I don’t know, but it will definitely be interesting. “We never had any intention of keeping the search for Danny going forever, it was only a way to bring the audience into the world and introduce them to the characters. It’s time for the audience to find out why the show is called ‘Revolution.'” Sweet! That’s what I like to hear! I’ll come back for a second season if you will just answer season one – mostly. I don’t mind cliffhangers at all. Oftentimes, if done right, they launch the entire storyline for the next season, and give us something to speculate on during the hiatus.
There is more to the interview and you can read it at Zap2It’s website. In light of the show’s success I really wanted to look at the reasons for its appeal. I’ve told you why I like it so much, what about you? What keeps you watching this fantastic show?
