COMMUNITY: Documentary Filmmaking: Redux Recap

By  |

Another Community documentary. Oh joy of joys! (I’m pretty sure that any episode that is based on a documentary is not going to lend itself very well to anything other than a running commentary.) So, context now, before it’s all lost: Dean Pelton wants to update the Greendale Community College commercial which runs during late night reruns, as it probably should.

Annie is script supervisor and thinks she runs the show. Jeff is the Dean, doing a spot on Pelton impression. Britta, Pierce, Shirley, and Troy are all actors in this project, though I can’t say that I love that idea.

Jeff’s plan to use Luis Guzman’s face is backfiring, as I could only imagine how well this is going to fall in his face. Nothing ever turns out as Jeff wants, because he’s our tragic hero afterall.

After Jeff’s plan backfires and Greendale’s most famous alumnus, Guzman, offers to be in the commercial, the Dean scraps his original plan and starts all over again. I don’t know if this is a sensible plan to rewrite the whole commercial. Abed has the right idea of what’s going to come from Pelton’s obsession with Guzman’s arrival now.

Why is Dean Pelton not wearing a shirt and unbuttoning his hoodie? I’m so scared for the process of what this commercial means to him, and how much it’s corrupting the whole school I mean, when everyone is involved, you know it’s wrong. (See: paintball)

Abed mentioned [easyazon-link asin=”B000XECFXS”]Hearts of Darkness[/easyazon-link], and well, now the four days over and nearly $10,000 over budget is making me laugh. (Does that mean that Jeff’s like Martin Sheen and he’s going to have a heart attack?)

Annie is developing Stockholm Syndrome from working with Dean Pelton. Oh lord, this is so many levels of wrong.

Pelton has turned into Cappola here. Nothing good will come from this. This insanity is the result of so many levels of insanity. I hope everyone does leave, though I suppose that means that Dean Pelton is going to wallow in self-pity.

Now that Guzman is on campus, I’m excited to see how far this has devolved. When there’s an opossum in the office, it’s a bad sign, Dean Pelton. I’m even more sure of that now that I’m hearing the sound effects.

The constant comments about hating [easyazon-link asin=”6305609705″]Apocalypse Now[/easyazon-link] vaguely hurts my soul (I love that movie) but there’s something about being behind the scenes that is more fascinating.

Dean Pelton just turned into Kurtz, and my lord, I want to die of laughter (right down to the shot of him with the blurred out shot). The fact that Abed was able to use the footage he was shooting with the first day’s footage is very well done.

Ending with Jeff giving Dean Pelton a hug to say that he’s a good Dean is one moment I’ll take with me this week, and want to cherish.

How the hell did Pierce end up in LA and on set? Oh I don’t even want to know, but I like that the actor is repeating the same process.

Community airs Thursdays at 8/7c on NBC.

Roz lives in the Los Angeles area, and has been a long time California girl. Despite her better judgment, she enjoys shows about the shallow sides of her home city, but will also find time to watch iZombie, Jane the Virgin, and much more. With a love of history, she also watches anything that is grounded in real life, including Victoria and black-ish. Having worked with children, she also follows shows she knows they watch (reminding her of those days of yore for her in the process). Contact her at roz@nicegirlstv.com.
