The new CBS sitcom, 2 Broke Girls, premiered last night and I have to admit that I’m hooked. I didn’t want to like this because Lord knows I don’t need another show to watch. Max (Kat Dennings) is a waitress who is used to hard work and seems to actually enjoy her job. I can relate to Max easily. Working is just life and she’s good at dealing with the public. She also bakes fantastic cupcakes which she sells at the diner for a few extra bucks in her pocket.
The owner of the diner is Han Lee, who changes his name to ‘Bryce’ to keep up with the changing neighborhood. Lee hires a new waitress which is Caroline (Beth Behrs), the daughter of a wealthy man who made his millions by scamming the city. He ends up in jail and Caroline ends up homeless and broke. She’s completely inexperienced at working at all, much less waitressing in a diner, but Caroline has a head for business.
After discovering Caroline asleep on the subway, Max invites her to bunk with her and her boyfriend. When the boyfriend shamelessly comes on to Caroline, she tells Max that she can do better than him. Max walks out of the diner, leaving Caroline with a rush of customers, but she walk in on the boyfriend and catches him with another woman. She kicks him out of her apartment, goes back to the diner and finishes her shift with Caroline, then invites her to share the apartment.
By the end of the episode, we’ve got Max and Caroline forming a tentative friendship, and we have the set up for what could be a fun and interesting series. Caroline proposes that with her business savvy and Max’s baking skills, along with some hard work and diligent saving habits, they could open their own cupcake shop in about two years. So far, they have $387.25 – and a horse.
2 Broke Girls is co-produced and co-created by Whitney Cummings, who’s own sitcom premieres Thursday, Sept. 22, on NBC. Watch Max and Caroline every Monday night at 8:30/7:30c, on CBS.

I really liked the closing graphic showing how much money they’ve earned so far. It tells me that the show does, in fact, have a plan. The writers now have a goal to write toward – getting these 2 broke girls to $250,000 – and it should be a lot of fun getting there!
I really enjoyed the show and can’t wait for the next one. This show is a keeper. I wondered about the cash graphic at the end and I hope at the end of each show it adds up. I am sure beside the waitressing the both of them will be doing odd jobs. This is a modern day Laverne and Shirley.
That was my thought too. I wondered if that total cash graphic would appear at the end of each episode. I’m wondering if Caroline is going to come up with a bunch of easy money plans as the show goes forward. It should be fun!
