NIKITA: Could You Sever All Ties to Be Part of Division?
Nikita moves to Fridays this Fall on the CW, paired with Supernatural instead of The Vampire Diaries. At first this seemed like a mismatch, splitting up two shows with strong female leads and placing one with a series about two guys. But the similarities between the two shows are actually pretty strong once you look closer. Both are series about people with extraordinary abilities who are working to protect the world from evil. And both are series about outsiders.
On Nikita, The Division recruits troubled youth, erases their background and shapes them into spies and assassins. They aren’t given the choice, unlike the Winchesters who chose to put their skills to use. Suppose you were given the chance to trade in your life for one of globe trotting spy work? Would you do it? What if it meant you had to cut all ties with everyone in your life?
That’s an instant “no” for me. I’d be tempted by the offer, sure. High stakes, espionage, saving the world? It’s certainly appealing because of course it’s as glamorous as it looks on TV. But I have 10 nieces and nephews who I adore and who need me to introduce them to pop culture and the joy of traveling (without having to go undercover). I have two brothers with whom I share a close bond. That’s a dozen reasons why I could not be recruited by Division.
But sometimes I think it would be awfully cool to join Nikita in carrying out one of her plans to take down the baddies.
Nikita season 1 arrives on DVD August 30, 2011.
