DOCTOR WHO: Series 6, Part 1 DVD Review

By  |

On July 19 the first part of the new acclaimed season of Doctor Who arrived on Blu-ray and DVD with the release of Doctor Who Series Six: Part One.

With twists and turns, in only seven episodes, the first half the sixth season of Doctor Who answered questions posed at the start of the series, and left the audience with even more questions once all of the information was (mostly) pieced together.

This season saw the return of Amy Pond and Rory Williams, a number of shocking deaths, and more than a few creepy adversaries for the Doctor to face with his friends. Also along the way, a new friend emerges and the true nature of another is revealed. No longer is River Song’s identity a secret, but with the revelation, more than a few questions are left as to her initial purpose.

As the season opened, the Doctor, Amy, and Rory, along with River Song and a new face, battled a foe introduced at the end of Series Five, against the backdrop of 1969 and the Moon Landing. Following the events in “The Impossible Astronaut” and “Day of the Moon”, the team of Amy, Rory, and the Doctor found themselves trapped on an 18th Century ship, with a mysterious ghost. After that adventure, the Doctor met his match in “The Doctor’s Wife”, an episode written by author Neil Gaiman, in which more about the Doctor and his TARDIS was revealed.

Leading up to the climatic finale, “The Rebel Flesh” and “The Almost People” presented a truly horrific prospect about humanity, and before the Doctor is faced with the toughest decision about what has been going on with Amy Pond so far.

“A Good Man Goes to War” finally answers the question about Amy, before showing just how far the Doctor will go to protect those who mean the most to him.

Doctor Who Series Six: Part One is available now on DVD and Blu-Ray, in a two disc set, which also includes featurettes about the series’ monsters.

With more than enough time before Doctor Who returns to BBC America on August 27, the DVD/Blu-Ray can also catch up anyone who has heard buzz about the show from friends.
