Nice Girls Faves Head to the Golden Globes

By  |

The 2011 Golden Globes ceremony airs Sunday, January 16 on NBC and several Nice Girls favorites will be represented in the TV categories. Here’s a look at who we’re rooting for.

Glee

Glee on FOXWhat can be said about the over-the-top antics of the cast of Glee, the little musicomedy that could and did, from FOX? It is irreverent, silly, wonderfully moving and magical. It has delved into all the horrors of being a teenager and that comes with that difficult time in all our lives; it has shown how intolerance can cripple but also how standing up for yourself and your friends can be powerful. It has provided musical numbers that any Glee Club member would envy and has had the audience screaming, crying and laughing all in one episode. When it comes to awarding the Golden Globe for Best Television Series, Comedy, it is easy to see how and why Glee is at the top of the list. ~ Rueben

Modern Family

Modern Family on ABCModern Family is a brilliant blend of comedy with semi-documentary commentary that is both engaging and entertaining. Focusing on a multi-tiered family all searching for love, happiness and a bit of peace while bringing up their children in today’s modern world of techno-gadgets, unconventional child-rearing techniques, and too many distractions caught everyone’s attention right away, the show invites us to experience all the hilarious travails of everyday life with them. Focusing on three distinct families, related by marriage and blood, their lives are intertwined in ways that invoke much love and laughter.  The secret of its success:  Modern Family knows how to showcase the finer and funnier moments of life. Also contributing to the show’s success are Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Sophia Vergara, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez.  It is the magical combination of all these talented comedians that make this modern family such a joy to watch. ~ Tiffany

The Good Wife

The Good Wife on CBSThe Good Wife continues to captivate viewers with its intriguing story of a woman, Juliana Margulies, attempting to balance her complex personal and professional lives. Joined by a dazzling array of talent, The Good Wife also offers the multi-faceted Christine Baranski, Josh Charles, Archie Panjabi,Chris Noth, Scott Porter, Alan Cumming, Matt Czuchry, Titus Welliver, Michael Ealy, Mary Beth Peil, Graham Phillips, and Makenzie Vega.  With such a rich cast, The Good Wife delivers one of the finest dramatic series on television today.  It teases, tantalizes and taunts its audience with layer upon layer of legal and political intrigue. ~ Tiffany

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead on A&ELanding on the television landscape with a resounding splash, The Walking Dead nabbed its first major television award nomination for Best Television Series – Drama.  It has also received a Writer’s Guild Nomination for Best New Series. The Walking Dead is a dark, intriguing and compelling tale of love and survival. Providing the stellar performances as the ill-fated survivors are: Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jon Bernthal, Chandler Riggs, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Melissa McBride, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Robert Singleton, with special recognition of the fine actors whose characters were sacrificed during the season:  Jeryl Prescott Sales, Emma Bell, Andrew Rothenberg, Adam Minarovich and Michael Rooker.   If the upcoming second season is as gripping as the first, we will all be on the edge of our seats! ~ Tiffany

Romola Garai

Romola Gorai as EmmaIn the PBS adaptation of the perennial classic Jane Austen story Emma, actress Romola Garai shined as Emma Woodhouse, the seemingly content and loving daughter who cared for her friends and her home with love and compassion. But, hidden beneath that honest veneer lies the horrible habit of matchmaking. Romola made it easy to believe that as Emma she was merely looking out for those for whom she loved and captivated the audience with her well-meaning but naïve intentions. Romola’s wonderful portrayal of the world’s worst matchmaker is deserving of the Golden Globe’s Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. ~ Rueben

Laura Linney

Laura Linney in The Big CIn what is assuredly a difficult situation, Cathy Jamison – as portrayed by the luminescent actress Laura Linney – hides the truth of her health from nearly everyone she loves; only sharing the facts of her impending demise with her oncologist and brassy neighbor until nearly the end of the season. Laura’s innate ability to make the audience love and hate Cathy for her wild and crazy choices since getting that horrible diagnosis is seen in every facial expression and movement. She moves through Cathy’s journey of self-discovery with grace, charm, wit and grief: all in the right doses. In the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy, Laura Linney is hands down the winner. ~ Rueben

Jane Lynch

Jane Lynch on GleeJane. Lynch. Two simple words that when combined together give the TV audience a mental picture of Sue Sylvester, coach of the Cheerios at McKinley High and the tormentor of the Glee Club and Mr. Schuester. But also when those words are combined together they give the TV audience a mental picture of an extremely talented actress who has been nominated for the Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy. Not an easy mouthful to say the least, but nothing that Sue Sylvester can’t handle and I don’t envy anyone who is up against Sue or Jane Lynch, as she is the shoo-in for this accolade. ~ Rueben

Juliana Margulies

Juliana Margulies in The Good WifeThis is Julianna Margulies’ second straight nomination for her riveting performance as Alicia Florrick in CBS’ hit drama The Good Wife. Margulies has already won the 2010 Golden Globe, as well as the Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. Her portrayal of a wife, mother, and lawyer navigating personal and professional landmines with grace and elegance have kept audiences emotionally invested in what might otherwise be a standard case-of-the-week legal drama. Playing the role with such quiet understatement adds gravitas and import to scenes that might be ignored in less skilled hands. ~ Melissa

Lea Michele

Lea Michele in GleeIn the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy at the Golden Globes, actress Lea Michele from the TV series Glee is a force for which to be reckoned while in the guise of her character Rachel Berry. This amazing, little talent with a big, booming voice -and a spirit that matches that sound – is a top contender for the prize because she is larger than life. Lea portrays Rachel with such honesty that she becomes Rachel; every nuance is Rachel, every infliction is Rachel. Yes, Rachel is over-bearing, self-centered and completely driven by a desire to be number 1, but at least she knows exactly what she wants and she goes for it 100 percent – no matter the cost. ~ Rueben

Piper Perabo

Piper Perabo in Covert AffairsReceiving her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama, Piper Perabo surprised us all.  Her breakout performance as Annie Walker, a CIA-recruit turned operative, has not only guaranteed a new hit television series, it garnered rave reviews in the process.  Perabo’s performance as part adrenaline-junkie, part rebel-with-a-cause combined with a natural luminous presence which has made Covert Affairs part of USA Network’s must-watch TV slate and clearly drawn favorable attention from the Hollywood Foreign Press in the process. ~ Tiffany

Kyra Sedgwick

Kyra Sedgwick in The CloserReceiving her sixth consecutive Golden Globe nomination, Kyra Sedgwick has once again been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama.  Having won the Golden Globe in 2006 and the 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Sedgwick, as the irrepressible Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson of The Closer, is a character that has clearly resonated with television viewers and critics alike. Sedgwick’s finely nuanced performance crosses the spectrum of comedy and drama, but no matter where the character goes, she ensures that we are enthralled by each and every second of it. ~ Tiffany

Chris Colfer

Chris Colfer in GleeWhether it is swooning over Finn or Blaine, dealing with a horrible tormentor (in the guise of Sue Sylvester or the football player who isn’t quite out of the closet yet) or passionately singing with glee or fear (who can forget the “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” number), Chris Colfer has made Kurt Hummel come alive with the Sound of Music – sorry I couldn’t resist that! – in the FOX musicomedy Glee. In receiving the nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Comedy Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy, Chris is being honored for bringing to life a character that could have otherwise been a pale caricature of an openly gay high schooler who is larger than life. ~ Rueben

Hugh Laurie

Hugh Laurie in HouseWith his sixth consecutive nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series Drama (which he won twice in 2005 and 2006), Hugh Laurie is a favorite at the Golden Globes.  Playing the volatile curmudgeon with a heart of gold Dr. House, Laurie’s performance has only continued to endear him to critics and fans over the years. It has been a delight to watch the mind-games and reverse psychology employed to get House’s staff and patients to do his bidding in order to save lives; plus, the Sherlockian attention to detail and ability to read people is still awe-inspiring. It is hard to imagine a more versatile actor who can deftly portray such a complex, yet lovable character. ~ Tiffany

Matthew Morrison

Matthew Morrison in GleeMatthew Morrison, who plays Mr. Schuester – the Spanish teacher who is also the coach and visionary behind New Directions at McKinley High School – on the popular FOX musicomedy Glee is up for the Golden Globe award of Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Comedy. Beneath that beautiful head of hair – that seems to get him into more trouble than its worth with his arch-rival Sue Sylvester – and behind that physique and beyond that lilting voice – beats the heart of a teacher who really cares about his students. Matthew lends many layers to Mr. Schue, making him a teacher any of us would have loved to have had during our high school years. He doesn’t always make the right decisions, but he does always learn from them and imparts those lessons onto his students. ~ Rueben

Chris Noth

Chris Noth in The Good WifePlaying a morally conflicted husband on The Good Wife, Chris Noth also walks a fine line between ruthless politician and loving husband seeking a path of redemption.  The dance between Alicia and Peter Florrick has viewers entranced wondering if their marriage will survive dalliances, public scrutiny, personal tension and potentially deadly professional ambitions. ~ Tiffany
