Spotlight: Women Behind the Scenes – Gretchen J. Berg
Today’s Women Behind the Scenes spotlight is shone on Executive Producer and Writer Gretchen J. Berg.
Gretchen was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and she always knew she wanted to be a writer. She met her long-time writing partner Aaron Harberts while attending Northwestern University in Chicago, as they went through a Creative Writing for the Media program that introduces students to writing for television, film, and the stage.
With Aaron by her side, she started out as part of the production staff on the half-hour comedy Caroline in the City in 1997 and 1998, which led to working as a writer for Beverly Hills, 90210 for the next year. In 1999, she was an executive story editor for the show. Two years later she did the screenplay for the box office movie Valentine and followed that up with working as a co-producer then later a producer and as a writer for the popular series Roswell from 2000 and 2002.
When Roswell came to a close, she became a Supervising Producer and Writer on the short-lived series John Doe, lasting from 2002 to 2003. In 2004, she was Executive Producer and Writer for the TV movie The Deerings, following that up as a Writer and Supervising Producer for the cult-favorite series Wonderfalls and, for a short time, worked as a writer for North Shore.
It was two years later that she (and Aaron) became a first time Executive Producer for the short-lived TV series Pepper Dennis, where she also served as a Writer. In 2007 and 2008, she served as Co-Executive Producer and Writer for the short-lived series Women’s Murder Club. That was followed by her work as a Writer and Co-Executive Producer for the cult-favorite series Pushing Daisies.
Most recently, she worked as a Writer and Executive Producer on the medical drama Mercy and is now a writer for the new drama Off the Map that debuts tonight on ABC.
