DVD Review: The Guild Season 3
Actress. Writer. Series Creator. Singer. Award Winner. What do all these words have in common? One very talented and gifted woman: Felicia Day.
Many readers may know Felicia from her role as one of the “potentials” during the latter days of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Others will know her from her acclaimed role in the highly popular, Joss Whedon-created, web sensation Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog. Meanwhile, others will know her as writer, series creator and actress behind the stand-out web series The Guild.
The quirky comedy about the Knights of Good is back for its third season, available on DVD since May 25, after debuting on Createspace DVD-on demand. The Guild is written for gamers, about gamers, by a gamer and has been viewed more than 50 million times by fans all over the world.
The new season opens with several members of the Knights of Good anxiously awaiting the release of the expansion pack to their game “The Spiers of Dragon War” outside the local Game Stop store. They are the first in line and cannot wait to get their hands on their copies. Unfortunately, they are “line-jumped” by a rival guild known as the Axis of Anarchy; thus setting up the core theme of the new season: competing with this new evil not only in the game world but also in the real world.
The Axis of Anarchy consists of leader Fawkes, played with menace and authority by fan-favorite actor Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation); Venom, the beautiful yet wheelchair-bound femme fatale, portrayed by Teal Sherer; Bruiser, the cop by day and brute enforcer of this guild, as played by J. Teddy Garces; Valkerie, the pseudo-pansylike textile worker who believes he is grammatical gifted (even though he isn’t), played with gusto by Mike Rose and Kwan, the Korean gamer/god of the MMO world who not only cannot speak English but also has a hand massager-translator by his side at all times, portrayed by Alexander Li.
Each episode of the third season ranges in length from three to eight minutes and opens with Codex (as portrayed by Felicia Day) addressing the current issues hitting her Guild. In her own unique and rather scattered-brained way, Codex expounds on each dilemma facing the Knights of Good and how they should handle each arising problem. If only solving those problems were as easy as talking about them.
As the 12 episodes move along, poor young Bladezz (played by Vincent Caso) is maligned by the Axis of Anarchy at school and at home as that Guild’s way to break the already tenuous hold the Knights of Good have on their union. They have already lost guild member Tinkerballa (as played by Amy Okuda) due to unfortunate circumstances from the previous season, but *SPOILER ALERT* she does eventually come back into the fold of her own guild at the last possible moment.
Meanwhile, Zaboo (portrayed by Sandeep Parikh) has finally landed himself a girlfriend in the form of rough and tumble (and sometimes lethal) Riley (as played by Michelle Boyd) and seems to be more obsessed with keeping her happy and satisfied than playing online. And, former Guild leader Vork (played by Jeff Lewis) is on a quest to discover more about himself by traveling all over the city in his make-shift home inside his van, which is fully equipped with antiquated computer equipment and household appliances.
While Codex tries to keep the remaining members of the Knights of Good together, trouble erupts in the home of Clara (portrayed by Robin Thorsen) when her overwrought husband, George, gives her a final ultimatum: give up the game world and spend more time with him and their children.
As you can imagine, there is a great deal of silliness and unpredictable circumstances that ensue over the course of the new season – and without spoiling any major plot details for those who want to check out this award-winning web series – the final showdown between the two Guilds is played out with a most unlikely victor and an even more unexpected cliffhanger.
