The New Amazing Doctor Who

Watching the BBC America special The Ultimate Guide to Doctor Who in preparation for the season premiere of the new season of the longest-running sci-fi series, featuring the 11th Doctor – as portrayed by Matt Smith, the youngest actor to ever play the role by the way – had a profound effect on me this past weekend. The one-hour special spotlighted the return of the cult-classic series under the tutelage of Russell T. Davies, which at that time, starred Christopher Eccleston as the legendary character and introduced Billie Piper as his companion Rose Tyler.

The special also examined the various aspects of the show including the Doctor’s enemies such as the Daleks and the Cybermen; his other companions including Martha Jones and Donna Noble and focused on the new doctor and his new companion Amy Pond. Of course, it contained interviews with the creative minds behind the reincarnation of the series and the mind behind the new season of the show – Steven Moffat, who was the prolific writer of some of the more memorable episodes of Doctor Who, including “The Girl in the Fireplace” and “Blink”.

Immediately following this special was the debut of the 11th Doctor – and the introduction of Matt Smith to the American audience; and while I’m a novice compared to many viewers of this series, I found him to be very good as the Doctor. He seemed very much like the David Tennant version of the Doctor in that he was quick on his feet, handled the role deftly and with purpose but retained much of the humor that has become a staple for the show even though it is considered a drama.

I have to admit I am looking forward to seeing this new Doctor and Amy Pond tackle the Weeping Angels that were featured in the episode “Blink”, how this new duo will handle the Daleks and Cybermen and even a bevy of female vampires, which have been seen in the recent trailers for upcoming episodes.

It’s going to be an amazing ride for long-time fans as well as the rest of us and I am definitely going to enjoy the ride.

I also wanted to share that living in Southern California can provide a TV fan with some very unique opportunities. Some weeks can be quiet, allowing me – since I live in Southern California – a chance to unwind after work and simply enjoy the weekly programming that I like the most; while other weeks, well, they can be hectic. This past week was one of those quiet weeks, giving me the chance to watch my shows (all 20 plus of them, yeah, I know I watch a lot of TV) while still having time to spend on my writing.

This week, however, will be slightly busier with the cast and crew of the popular USA Network series Psych being saluted at the Paley Center for Media this coming Thursday and then this coming weekend will be the annual Los Angeles Festival of Books that is held at the UCLA campus. I will be covering the Psych panel and will have a write-up here at NiceGirlsTV on what will, assuredly, be an entertaining night.

I also want to give a shout-out to the over twenty-strong fans of Alex O’Loughlin, the star of the short-lived CBS series Moonlight, who will be staking out a movie theatre in Westwood, California tomorrow for the premiere of his (hopefully big) box office premiere for the movie The Back-Up Plan where he stars alongside Jennifer Lopez. Due to real-life circumstances – namely, my day job – I won’t be able to join the girls for their day of fun, but I sure hope the day turns out well for all of them.
