LUCIFER: “Weaponizer” Discussion

By  |

This week’s Lucifer started out rather comical with the death of an action star leading to lots of jokes, but it ended on a deadly serious note that I don’t think any of us saw coming. Tell us what you thought in the comments!

Finally, Dan and Lucifer find some common ground bonding over their similar taste in movies.

Cay: Too funny! They almost seemed like friends – I guess last week’s undercover mission helped bring them together.

Karen: Ah, the bloom of a new bromance. Dan gives up on his first love and finds a new one. Loved seeing Chloe eschew them and then call them “adorable” in the same breath.

Mynda: Those two just proved my lifelong belief that movies find common ground in everyone. However, I don’t know how I feel about a world where Detective Douche and Lucifer are besties!

Melissa: It was, as Chloe noted, adorable if not slightly disturbing. In hindsight, I wonder if Douche is going to end up filling a brotherly void for Lucifer?

Lisa: I’m still not a fan of detective Douche but seeing him and Luci geek out over action movies was pretty entertaining

Which brother do you think has/had the best powers?

Melissa: Uriel’s powers were amazing. Being able to detect patterns and manipulate them to get what you want is one of the sneakiest things I’ve ever seen. Imagine if he used that gift to cause good things to happen instead of bad? Which brings me to a question – is/was Uriel an angel of vengeance? Like, an Old Testament angel?

Cay: Uriel’s powers are cool because they are so subtle yet powerful, but Amenadiel’s previous powers of being able to stop time could be very useful.

Lisa: Oooh. That’s tough. I’m going with Amenadiel here.

Karen: Yes, stopping time is the best. Remember the diamond thief? #TiaraAndUnderpants I’m not sure they all have different powers though, they may just use them according to their preference.

Mynda: No surprise here. I love Luci best.

It got kind of deep when Lucifer talked about how wars have been fought over disagreements over God’s intent.

Cay: I like it when the show goes there – there is so much fertile ground that is interesting to think about, but not necessarily controversial.

Mynda: Once again the Lucifer Writers shine bright in bringing up huge truths tucked safely away as entertainment.

Lisa: I enjoy it when they bring up underlying truths and have deep conversations. Like Mynda said shout out to the amazing writers!

Karen: The comic touches on those issues quite a bit, and I always love the way it balances the humor and the mythos. Same with the show, although I could actually use more of the overarching Angel – Heaven/Hell storyline.

Melissa: Comments (or rants) like that are what give this show an edge over other supernatural fare, in my opinion. How many of us have been frustrated by the seeming opaqueness of God’s words and desires? Or at least how others interpret them?

How do you think killing Uriel will affect Lucifer and the rest of the family?

Cay: Judging by the last scene in Lucifer’s apartment and the previews for next week, Lucifer may never be the same.

Lisa: Poor Luci. I agree with Cay. I don’t think he will ever be the same after this. What repercussions will he face?

Mynda: It looks like Lucifer will face a dark night of the soul after being placed in the impossible situation of killing Uriel to save his mother. Dr. Linda is going to have her hands full with this and MAYBE Chloe will finally realize Mr. Morningstar is as he professes.

Karen: Lucifer will definitely not be the same, but there may also be other ramifications. It’s not often that an immortal being is killed.

Melissa: Lucifer killing Uriel and the aftermath of that act were the most meaningful parts of this episode for me. He’s so flippant and Devil-may-care (see what I did there?), it’s easy to assume Lucifer doesn’t value life. But we’ve been shown again and again that he does, it just means something different for him. As a being who can move between realms, inhabiting both corporeal and incorporeal forms, what Lucifer values is souls. We were reminded of that when Uriel brought forth Azriel’s sword and Lucifer was horrified that his brother intended to erase their mother from existence. Not send her to Heaven or Hell, end her. Now that he’s used that sword on his little brother, I think Lucifer is going to have to wrestle with some serious demons, for lack of a better word.

Do you think Charlotte is really evil and that Lucifer’s protection of her is foolhardy?

Cay: I’m torn, I want to see her as Lucifer wants her to be, but there was a reason she was in hell…then again, Lucifer was in hell too…

Mynda: I can’t decide about Charlotte.

Melissa: I still can’t tell if she’s playing the boys or not. She seemed genuinely upset over Uriel’s death, and that Lucifer was the one to do it, but Uriel did allude to her being manipulative and scheming – “she’ll get back to Heaven, father will forgive her, he’ll drop his guard, then she’ll destroy him.” I don’t know who or what to believe.

Karen: There’s a reason for everything, but she is truly being punished by simply having to live the life of her human “container”. So… there’s that.

Lisa: I’m still leaning on the side on not trusting her. I can’t get that evil look up to the sky she had once Lucifer told her she could stay. Mama Morningstar is up to something.

Favorite scenes

Cay: The fight between Uriel, Maze, and Lucifer in the wrecked church was really awesome – not only was it visually stunning overall, but it was the perfect place for conflict between two celestial beings – a church, but one in disrepair, damaged, not unlike the fighters themselves.

Melissa: The fight in the church was outstanding, right down to the song choice, but the aftermath gets my vote. Lucifer’s horror over what he’s done, Charlotte comforting him despite her own grief, that was powerful.

Lisa: Man do I love watching Maze kick ass! The scene in the Church with Maze, Uriel and Lucifer was great! I also liked the scenes with Detective Douche and Luci geeking out over Body Bag.

Karen: Lucifer going through Maze’s box of “toys” and Chloe reading Coraline by Neil Gaiman (creator of this incarnation of Lucifer) to Trixie.

Favorite lines

Cay:
“Yes, I’m sorry that the children were late to school…yes, I understand that pants need to be worn every day…” – Charlotte

“Just think of me as your guardian devil” – Lucifer

Mynda: I wish Lucifer was MY GUARDIAN Devil! I love all the emotional scenes this episode. Lauren German, D B Woodside and Tom Ellis were truly phenomenal this episode!

Melissa:
“Not on my watch.” – Chloe with a mischievous smirk

Every time Lucifer, Amenadiel or Uriel called each other “brother”.

Karen:
“I will avenge you.” – Lucifer (note there is a period there, he didn’t yell)
“Give Mom to me, or I’ll take back what Dad gave you.” – Uriel

“He makes a butterfly flap its wings and a housewife gets chlamydia.” – Lucifer

Lucifer: “Welcome to Devil Time.”
Chloe: “What are you doing?”
Lucifer: “Trying out my new catchphrase.”
Dan: “Welcome to Devil Time? What the hell does that mean?”
Lucifer: “She knows what it means.”
Jamie Lee: “I have no idea what that means.”

Lucifer airs Mondays at 9/8c on FOX

Cay's family thinks her obsession with pop culture is "not normal". Normal is boring!
