The Nice Boy of the Week this week is actor Tony Curran, who is one of the cast members of the upcoming Syfy series Defiance that will debut on Monday, April 15.

Tony Curran was born in Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He got his first break on television in 1986 in the British children’s series called Dramarama.

A few years later he had small roles in the box office films Captive that starred Julia Ormond and Tim Roth and Being Human that starred Robin Williams. Over the course of the next four years, he appeared in the British and Scottish TV series Soldier Soldier, Grange Hill, Taggart, The Bill, A Touch of Frost, This Life and Touching Evil.

During that time he appeared in the British TV mini-series Undercover Heart and Great Expectations and then he had a role in the 1999 box office film The 13th Warrior that starred Antonio Banderas.

It was in 1999 that he was part of the cast for the Hallmark Entertainment made-for-TV movie called The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns that included among its cast Randy Quaid, Whoopi Goldberg, Roger Daltrey, Colm Meaney and Kieran Culkin.

At the turn of the century and over the span of the next six years, Tony appeared in the box office films Gladiator, Pearl Harbor, Blade II, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Flight of the Phoenix, Beowulf & Grendel, Underworld: Evolution and Miami Vice. He also appeared in the made-for-TV movie The Mists of Avalon and he appeared in the short-lived TV series Night Stalker.

Since 2008, Tony has appeared in the online series Gemini Division as well as guest roles in TV shows like Numb3rs, Medium, Primeval, 24, The Mentalist, CSI, Boardwalk Empire, Luck, Covert Affairs, Hawaii Five-0 and he played Vincent Van Gogh in two very memorable episodes of Doctor Who. During that time, he also appeared in the box office films The Lazarus Project that starred Paul Walker and Piper Perabo, Ondine that starred Colin Farrell, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, X-Men: First Class and The Adventures of Tintin.

Besides his upcoming role in the much-buzzed-about Syfy drama Defiance – that is set in the near future, where aliens have come to Earth seeking a new home after their solar system was destroyed – Tony will appear in the upcoming box office film Mary, Queen of Scots.

Tony participates in marathons to raise money for charity and is a frequent participant in New York City’s annual Dressed to Kilt event that is run by Friends of Scotland in honor of Tartan Week.
