POLDARK: Three Big Fights from Episode Three {Recap}

By  |

Poldark continues to use small intimate moments and large dramatic clashes this season as the show delves into more of the life of Ross Poldark and those around him in Cornwall.

Tonight’s episode focused on the interpersonal dynamics between everyone we care about (and some we don’t) as the conflict between Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) and George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) flirts its way into more and more of the lives of everyone else.

Ross and George

George has purchased more and more shares of Wheal Leisure, trying to gain more and more influence into Ross’ business dealings. That influence stopped the mine from being able to explore a possible store of ore from another old mine, but not before Ross decides to go into business with Francis (Kyle Soller). Of course George has given Francis the money that he uses to go into business, and the story as to why Francis has the money causes Ross to finally put a punch to George’s face. The fight doesn’t satisfy nearly enough of the tension between these two men, but it does raise serious questions about Ross’ new venture with Francis and what else George has plans.

The rift between Ross and George also works its way down to Elizabeth and Francis and their relationship with George.

Ross and Demelza

Not since these two married has their live been simple and easy. But since the trial, Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) has been more concerned with what Ross does for money, and she has no problem expressing her frustration. To make some more money (that goes to the mine with Francis), Ross agrees to let his land be used for some smugglers to use to avoid taxes. Demelza hates it. She’s not the only one who hates a decision, though, as Demelza has been going out in a small boat to catch fish for the family. Going out well into her pregnancy, she starts to have contractions as she’s still off shore. Ross yells at her, she yells back, but it all seems forgiven as they celebrate the christening of their baby boy.

Caroline Penvenen (Gabriella Wilde) is still desperate for the attention of Dr. Enys (Luke Norris), and she chooses to use some of her considerable wealth to get his attention when he wants to focus on his patients who are suffering from scurvy. She has no concept of what those who struggle to make ends meet do, but she’s happy to flaunt some money their way for her chance to see Dr. Enys more.

But she’s not the only one who wants to flaunt what they have over others. George has been doing that from the beginning. He wants to be thought of as more than he is, even if he uses deceit and coercion to get there. Besides Ross’ downfall, what does he want?

Poldark airs on Sundays at 9PM on PBS.

Roz lives in the Los Angeles area, and has been a long time California girl. Despite her better judgment, she enjoys shows about the shallow sides of her home city, but will also find time to watch iZombie, Jane the Virgin, and much more.
