SHADOWHUNTERS Recap: The Mortal Cup

I’d like to assume that you are watching Shadowhunters with some knowledge of what the show is about. There is a book series, a movie and Rueben did an intro to the show, which you can read here. However, if this is all new to you let me fill you in. Clary is an average girl, has a guy best friend who is in love with her and when she turns 18 she finds out she is a demon hunter. Stop me if you’ve heard that one.

Now that you are up to speed let’s recap.

For her 18th birthday her best friend, Simon, takes her out to celebrate. Meanwhile across town Jace, Alec and Isabelle are also getting ready to go out. They are ridiculously good looking demon hunters, and due to a recent spree of murders, they are out to find the demon who is draining the blood from mundanes (normal people).

As fate would have it Jace literally runs into Clary outside the club. He is very surprised she can see him and her friend Simon is equally surprised since he doesn’t see anyone. He thinks Clary may be losing it, she can’t let it go though and follows Jace into the club. It doesn’t take her long to spot Jace and his friends. She even manages to run right into the middle of a demon vs demon hunter battle. Not how my 18th birthday went in case you were wondering.

Clary goes straight home and tells her Mom, Jocelyn. Her Mom says it’s time to tell Clary everything, only they are interrupted by some very angry looking men. Jocelyn only has time to tell Clary she pissed off a very powerful man (Valentine) and his followers (The Circle) when she took something from him many years ago. She tells Clary to trust her instincts, gives her a necklace and then opens a mystical door that transports Clary to Luke. Luke is her Mom’s friend/boyfriend. He has been around since Clary was a child. Jocelyn says Luke is the only one Clary can trust. Next thing Clary knows she is at Luke’s precinct.

Jocelyn says behind and fights off the members of The Circle who are looking for The Cup. As they close in on her she takes a potion of some sort and crumples to the floor. Across the world The Circle brings a comatose Jocelyn to Valentine.

Clary overhears Luke telling someone he cares nothing for Clary or Jocelyn, he only wants The Cup. Clary runs home to find her Mother gone and her apartment ransacked. She isn’t there long when a demon attacks her and she is just about to get eaten by said demon when Jace shows up. Thank goodness he does because the demon has bitten Clary and she passes out. Conveniently into Jace’s arms. Where are attractive strong men when I feel light headed? Not standing around waiting to catch me, that’s for sure.

Clary wakes up to find Isabelle sitting with her. Alec and Jace are there too and Alec isn’t amused. He does not like a mundane being there. Jace argues she isn’t a mundane but Alec doesn’t care, Isabelle has to drag Alec from the room. Jace tries to explain things to her. “All the legends are true. We’re Shadowhunters. We protect the human world from the demon world.”
Clary just wants to find her Mom. Simon, who has tracked Clary with a Find my Friend app, is outside Shadowhunter Headquarters. She says she will be right down. She wants nothing to do with this, “supernatural fight club.”

Still invisible to mundanes Jace takes out a Circle member who has also tracked Clary. At Clary’s request Jace makes himself visible for Simon to see. Needless to say Simon is a little freaked out. He wants Clary to come with him and Jace wants her to stay. We end the episode with Clary torn between the two.
