Confessions of a TV Addict
We Nice Girls have been around for a while now, and I feel like this is the point where I can share something without feeling shamed. No, it’s nothing horrible, just a basic fact that seems right so share: I rarely watch TV without the recommendation of my friends.
Of my current list of TV shows (those still on the air) I can think of two that I came to watch without much input from my friends. I’m sure that’s odd, but it’s a sad fact.
To set the stage, I should explain that I watched plenty of TV as a kid, and slowly grew to watch what my parents did when I was old enough. Monday nights in the 90s were filled with the three of us watching Murphy Brown and as I got older, Chicago Hope with my mom. By the time I was in junior high and high school, I had decided to watch Dawson’s Creek, but didn’t bother with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, despite my love of the movie.
Most of the shows I actually watched in high school are a blur now (clearly they didn’t make an impression on them, or the TV in the late 90s and early 00s was just that awful–take your pick.) As I arrived to college, I forgot about most TV, the sad byproduct of not having one in my room those first two years. When I finally did have a tube in my room, I happily awaited The OC, mostly to laugh at how live in southern California was portrayed.
After I came home, I’d finally gotten back into the habit of TV watching, and was happily introduced to Veronica Mars by a friend and slowly moved into paying attention to prime time TV. From there, it’s been a downward spiral into having a DVR so I can actually keep up with all of it.
However, it took the recommendations of my friends to actually get me into post of the shows I’m happy to gab about. With the except of Josh Schwartz’s two shows, every other show I watch came after a friend told me I had to watch. Call me a sheep if you want, but I’m fine with that.
In fact, I still don’t mind it at all. I’m in the middle of watching How I Met Your Mother after enough friends told me I should (and with the help of a very nice sale at my local Border’s.)
Thanks to all of you who’ve pushed me into watching something–I don’t think I’d be the TV junkie I am without it.
