A Million Little Things: “no one is to blame”

By  |

A Million Little Things aired another new episode this week from its third season.

Here is the official synopsis for this episode (season 3, episode 16) entitled “no one is to blame”:

As Gary once again acts as the glue that keeps this friend group together, he discovers that it is taking a toll on his relationship with Darcy. Meanwhile, Sophie leans on Rome to process her dad’s struggles and choices and how they might influence her own life.

Nice Girls Cay and Rueben share their thoughts on this episode [spoiler alert]:

Cay:

So, we’re clearly continuing the “pandemic effects our storylines but otherwise we ignore the day-to-day stuff” approach. Ok, that complaint once again out of the way, it was an interesting choice for Sophie to go to Rome, but I guess he more than any of her father’s friends would understand the thought process in someone who was suicidal. I’m trying to think if we’ve ever really seen Sophie interact with Rome before? Definitely Delilah and Regina and Sophie and Regina, but not sure about Sophie and Rome. I’m pleased that Sophie decided that she’s going to report Peter, although I have a sense of how he’s going to react and how it is going to go down. But, it’s a very brave thing to do.

Back to Rome, there was barely a mention of his documentary – I really thought that was going to be a project that was going to make money, but I guess he’s going to do that lame commercial instead to bring some money in while the restaurant struggles. I’m so done with the “shit on Rome and Regina” storylines! They lost the baby, then Rome’s movie, then Regina gets hurt, now they are potentially going to lose the restaurant and Rome is back to making commercials that he hates. Can we get some good news for them for once?

As predicted, it didn’t take long for things to get awkward between Darcy and Gary over Eddie moving in. Maybe we will be done with her if she moves so that she can keep shared custody with her ex? I’m also kind of done with her son. He’s not doing Theo any favors – I don’t think he’s a good influence. I can accept that “kids of divorce get paid off with lots of material stuff” is a real thing, but it is so far from how we’ve seen Eddie and Katherine raise Theo over the years that it just seems incongruous. Maybe they are just trying to make the point of how much has changed in that family? Or maybe it’s just storytelling laziness in falling back on old tropes.

Sigh…Alan and Katherine. So over them! Every time that I get hopeful that maybe they will go their separate ways, it’s a ruse. How about Katherine takes some time off from being in a relationship to get her self together first? She’s clearly not ready and it’s painful for everyone involved, especially us watching.

Looks like Delilah and the baby are coming back for the finale (and they are quarantining in a hotel in Boston while everyone else on the show is running around wherever and interacting with friends and strangers alike with no concern over the pandemic!?!)

Rueben:

It was obvious that Sophie was having a dream about Leila; and it makes sense that Sophie would have that kind of a dream since the whole situation is so prominently on her mind. I agree that it is brave of Sophie to want to report him. Hopefully that will give her the closure she needs, but I really have to wonder if there will be any kind of real resolution or punishment inflicted upon Peter; and how he (and his wife) will react to it all. It’s not going to go smoothly that’s for sure; and I have a feeling that he will point the finger at her, blaming her instead.

Then there is the whole issue with Eddie being at Gary’s apartment, having to act as the “guardian” over Eddie’s visits with Theo. I can understand Katherine being reticent about Theo being alone with Eddie because of his addiction, that only makes sense; but how long can this work with Eddie and Gary being roommates? Especially given that snide little comment made by Darcy to Gary. She said, “Sometimes I wish I could be one of your friends” – OUCH! But, if she does move to be closer to her ex-husband so they can co-parent Liam (who I agree is not a good friend for Theo and I’m not really liking this kid anyway), I wouldn’t mind. I’m over Gary and Darcy. I don’t believe Gary when he says he loves her; and I just don’t see them continuing with this relationship for much longer.

As for Gary, he is always doing SO much for his friends. He is always there for them; he has always been the best part of this whole show; but this one time, I was really impressed with what Rome brought to the episode not only in his talk with Sophie (and you are correct, Cay, I don’t think he and Sophie have really had a moment like this before – that’s usually saved for Gary); but also his attempt to explain to Tyrell WHY he is taking that pathetic commercial and then being there to support Regina with all the restaurant drama. Once again, I agree with you that we need to see some good things happen for Rome and Regina. No more problems for them, ok? I want to see better events for them, but given that we only have two more episode, we’ll have to wait for next season I guess.

It was great to see that Delilah is back with the baby (who isn’t really a baby anymore); but – as you said – they only seem to use the pandemic when it’s “convenient” for the storyline. They are hot and cold on the protocols and safety procedures; they are failing to be consistent in any way. Let’s just hope that when season 4 airs, we have a time jump, wipe the slate clean on the useless way they are displaying the pandemic and get our characters on a better track with their lives.

Cay's family thinks her obsession with pop culture is "not normal". Normal is boring!
