BLOOD & TREASURE Roundtable: The Curse of Cleopatra – Parts I and II

Hey NiceGirls! We are finally at the premiere of Blood & Treasure starring Matt Barr (Valor) and Sofia Pernas (The Brave). I say finally because Rueben and I have been looking forward to this Indiana Jones-esque show since the moment the commercials started playing.

In the premiere the discovery of the tomb of Antony and Cleopatra sets off a worldwide chase between a brilliant antiquities expert, a cunning thief and a ruthless terrorist.

Join us as we use our new ratings system known as SASSY – S(tupid), A(wesome), S(o) S(o) and Y(Your Thoughts):

STUPID

Leah: My only real issue was how goody goody and slightly naive Danny was. For a badass, ex-FBI antiquities reclaimer, he was a little…make that very…wide-eyed about things.

Rueben: Yeah, you are right that Danny is a bit too goody, goody (and I’m a goody goody so that’s saying a lot). I also found it quite crazy that Interpol Agent Gwen would leave the two of them alone on that plane given Lexi’s lengthy resume of bad deeds, thinking that she wouldn’t try to escape and take Danny with her since they both wanted to hunt down and stop Farouk for good.

AWESOME

Leah: I really liked the show overall. It had a National Treasure/Mr. & Mrs. Smith/Leverage feel. They definitely packed a lot in two hours as well. We got backstory, which helped explain what was going on in the present. We got international locations. We got gadgets. All great!

Also, anytime Oded Fehr is on my screen I am happy. I don’t even care if he is a bad guy – I. Love. Him.

Rueben: I loved the backstory too – that is so helpful in learning about characters and their connections to each other – and the change of locales was so great. For me it was like watching The Mummy franchise (with Brendan Fraser), Indiana Jones combined with Lara Croft and a little bit of MacGyver, The Librarians and Alias thrown in for good measure. I loved the action and pace; each character was believable. I especially enjoyed Father Chuck and his “dude” comments to Danny.

SO-SO

Leah: I could have done without a few of the usual TV tropes. The cop in Rome who assumed Danny was bad, despite his service record, and was going to have him arrested – for instance.

Rueben: I think we’re gonna get more TV tropes, but that’s just the curse of TV shows most of the time. We can hope (perhaps against hope) that they will tamp those down, and be a bit more original.

Leah: I’m all in for this series. Super excited to see where it goes!

Rueben: I’m sold on the show for sure. I loved all the familiar faces: Oded!! Like you, Leah, I’ll watch him play anything – even the bad guy. Katia Winter (Interpol Agent Gwen), who is from Sleepy Hollow; James Callis from Battlestar Galactica, who I have a feeling we’ll see much more of than that one scene; Antonio Cupo – who has appeared in several Hallmark Channel movies and the TV show Bomb Girls – what is the deal with this cult of Cleopatra protectors that he seems to be a part of; and, of course John Larroquette, which only lends to The Librarians feel I mentioned. I really liked Sofia Pernas (from our past fave show The Brave) as Lexi. She is such a great kick-ass, take no prisoners kind of character and, of course, Matt Barr – also from Sleepy Hollow – let’s just hope they stop him from being too naive as the series progresses.
