LUCIFER Roundtable: “O, Ye Of Little Faith, Father”

By  |

Lucifer is back! We were pretty worried last year when Fox canceled the show starring our Future Fake Husband, but then Netflix divinely intervened and gifted us with a season four.

Netflix has dropped the whole season, as they do, but we will be recapping an episode a week as to get the full season experience.

Join us as we use our new rating system known as SASSY – S(tupid), A(wesome), S(o) S(o) and Y(Your Thoughts) – to discuss Lucifer episode 4.03, “O, Ye Of Little Faith, Father”.

STUPID/SAD

Melissa: I added a different S-word, sad, to this section because I can’t fault Ella for questioning her faith, but it does make me sad to watch her wrestle with doubts about something she held so dear. It’s a rite of passage for many people, and while my own struggle wasn’t as traumatic as I think hers will be, I can relate. Here’s hoping she finds a person of true faith and compassion who can help her find her footing.

Cay: Ok, Maze is a pretty badass demon as backup, but seriously Dan, do you have a death wish? Sure seems like it. And Luci nearly strangles the preppy rocket company guy and then he goes and hugs him later? Yeah, I’m definitely not buying it and there is no way the guy doesn’t file a lawsuit against Lucifer and LAPD.

Lisa: I agree with Mel. It is sad to see Ella struggling with her faith, but it is so relatable. I hope she finds her footing as well. I think that man was stupid as hell to kill himself and the priest was even worse for sacrificing three innocent lives to hunt down Lucifer. Ugh…

Lucifer

AWESOME

Melissa: That final scene between Lucifer and Chloe was outstanding and long overdue. At last, they were honest with each other, especially Chloe. She admitted her (perfectly valid!) apprehensions about Lucifer, her part in the plot against him, her hope that he can change but her confusion about whether she can truly accept him. For his part, Lucifer was achingly vulnerable and honest about his disappointment and hurt. I think this may have been the best performance I’ve ever seen from Lauren.

Cay: I’m with Melissa, that was the scene that we’ve been waiting several seasons for! It was so honest and heartfelt. I also really like that it will keep them apart but in an interesting way. I really don’t want to see them get together unless maybe it’s the end of the show. As I watched it play out, I kept thinking that Chloe needs to talk to Dr. Linda – she seems to have made peace with it all (although has she ever really seen Luci’s face? I can’t remember).

Lisa: Me too! I loved the honesty of that scene with Luci and Chloe. It was long overdue. I also loved the scene with Amenadiel and Dr. Linda at the doctor’s office. It was so sweet that he proposed to her she said all she needed was for someone to hold her hand and tell her it was going to be ok. Another real moment and great performance.

SO-SO

Melissa: Maze and Detective Dan taking matters into their own hands with the Los X gang. On the one hand, they make a great team (remember in season 2 when they teamed up against Charlotte and we all wanted a spin-off?) and watching them kick butt was fun. On the other hand, Detective Dan has some pretty dark impulses (remember in season 1 when he was a dirty cop?) and Maze is more than willing to encourage and enable those impulses. After Charlotte’s death and his enduring sense of helplessness, I worry that this is the beginning of another downward spiral for Dan.

Cay: It seems weird that Dr. Linda wouldn’t be handling this whole pregnancy thing better. I guess it’s interesting to see her lose it, but she dealt with the whole Maze is a Demon, Lucifer is the Devil, it all exists much better than finding out she’s prego. Although it is amusing to watch Maze and others “torture” her, whether intentionally or not.

Lisa: Yeah, it’s not looking so hot for Dan. Maze kicks major ass but is not the best influence for him for sure.

Lucifer

YOUR THOUGHTS

Melissa: The whole Random Priest plotline was not my favorite, but I acknowledge that it did serve a narrative purpose and at least it was executed better than most of the mythology plots. I especially appreciated that Father What’s His Name’s superior was properly horrified that he’d orchestrated the deaths of three innocent people as part of his plan to exorcise the Devil from Earth and saw to it that consequences resulted. Good job, Your Excellency. Using all of that to not only progress Lucifer and Chloe’s relationship but also set up Eve’s arrival was a neat bit of storytelling. I’m actually excited for the Chloe-Lucifer-Eve triangle!

Cay: I like when they bring theology and mysticism into the series (my favorite episode of the series is “God Johnson”), and this was really intriguing. I’m happy that they didn’t drag the Chloe plotting against Luci out too long, but it’s quite clever that it may well be the priest wasn’t entirely wrong, he just has the wrong woman.

Lisa: I guess I’m the slow one (or I missed something) because my initial thought was, “Who the hell is that woman?” After reading your comments, I now know it is Eve but I definitely did not know that after watching the episode. It does make me intrigued to see what comes next.
