THE GOOD PLACE Roundtable: The Ballad of Donkey Doug

By  |

The Good Place was all new – and after that big reveal last week, Team Cockroach has a new mission. Let’s see what the Nice Girls thought was SASSY about this episode:

Stupid:

Roz:  I don’t get Donkey Doug at all. It explains some of Jason, but that relationship is weird! Also why hit on your son’s wife?

Cay: I hated to see Chidi break up with Simone. She deserves so much better, particularly if she didn’t dump him after the Peep Chili incident and him getting fired.

Cara: There wasn’t anything I really felt was terrible this week. In fact, I felt like the show was back on it’s game this week, and I really enjoyed this episode (as stupid funny as some moments were).

Awesome:

Roz:  Janet’s wanting to “BING!” when she comes up with a new idea about how to get Chidi to practice breaking up with Simone. (I’m sad Simone will be gone, but didn’t we know that relationship was sort of short-lived?)

Cay: The looks on Michael and Tahani’s face whenever Pillboy and Donkey Doug got going, especially about “Double Trouble” (which was hilariously wrong!).

Cara: Yes, Michael and Tahani experiencing Jason’s world was pretty great. For me the best part was Chidi running break up simulations, but I really cracked up at the completely botched actual break up. It felt like a classic Good Place scene to me.

So-So:

Roz:  This new plan seems a bit awkward. We have Team Cockroach knowing that they want to and need to save lives but I want these missions to feel more organic and less “team splits up and goes on a trip to do a thing”.

Cay: I was torn with Donkey Doug. It’s definitely more clear where Jason gets it from and some of it was really funny, but I felt bad laughing because clearly Doug and Jason are the product of several generations of stupidity, crime, and substance abuse. Pillboy was a bit more sympathetic. I agree with Roz that things seem a bit scattered right now – the season seemed liked it was starting to gel, but then them all finding out about what is going on has sent things off in various directions that don’t feel all that coherent, although there have been some funny bits.

Cara: I agree that the show has to find its groove with the new scenario, but I could see this new Highway to Heaven vibe being fun. I actually felt better about this episode than I have about some of the earlier ones. I agree that it was hard to look past the systemic problems that lead to Donkey Doug and Pillboi though. There’s hope though. Pillboi clearly cares about the people in the nursing home, and Donkey Doug did something good….well, good for him… in the end.

Your Thoughts/Favorite Quote:

Roz:  Chidi made all these great strides in making a decisions, but now he can’t get this one about Simone right? I don’t get it.

Cay: The restaurant where Chidi broke up with Simone was called “French Pressing Nemo”. So wrong!

Cara: Eleanor – “She’s a badass, and her world is bigger than your break up.”

The Good Place airs Thursday 8/7c on NBC. What did we think of other episodes? Check those out here.

Karen Lindsay, often teased as being "obscurely famous," talks a lot. (i.e. she podcasts). Her current and past projects involve television shows like "Chuck", "Castle", "Orphan Black", "Farscape", "Supergirl", "Lucifer" and many others. She's an avid gamer, reader, & collector of all things shiny - and while you may not think those things go hand-in-hand, they sometimes do. So don't ask her about how many pets she has in Warcraft. (or how shiny they are).
