THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: 1912 Recap

By  |

After waiting what seemed like forever, I could not wait to get back to Mystic Falls and boy this episode did not disappoint. After being shot by Dr. Fell at the end of the last episode, Alaric wakes up in jail. Psycho Dr. Fell accused him of coming at her with a knife and she shot him in self defense. Damon and Alaric try to convince Sheriff Forbes that the psycho doc is trying to frame Alaric, but she will not release him without proof.

During a jog, Matt tells Elena that he spoke with Bonnie and her mother decided to complete the transformation into a vampire with Caroline’s help. Elena feels like it’s her fault because Damon bit Abby to save her life. Before she can feel too sorry for herself, she gets a call from Sheriff Forbes and rushes to the police station.

At Casa de Salvatore Damon wants to get to the bottom of the Founders’ Council murderer. He asks a pen-tapping Stefan about their nephew Zachariah’s funeral (who was stabbed) and how he wasn’t the first council member to be killed in 1912. Damon finds Stefan’s diary and they flashback to 1912 when Stefan met Mariana Lockwood and Samantha Gilbert at the funeral. Samantha warned Stefan that Zachariah was murdered and it wasn’t a good time to be a Founder in Mystic Falls (some things never change I guess).

Back in the present, Damon and Stefan are at Mystic Grill trying to figure out a connection between the murdered victims when Rebekah joins them. She asks if the Founders’ Council murderer was ever caught and Damon said it was blamed on Vampires. He doesn’t see how it could have been vampires because the Salvatore brothers were the only vampires in town, except for Sage. The plot thickens.

Still in jail, Alaric is pleading with Sheriff Forbes to let him go. She tells him that both victims got into altercations with Dr. Fell before they died and that Alaric was witness to them. He also had a two-hour call with Meredith on the night that Bill Forbes was killed, and he has no alibi for the night the medical examiner was killed (it is looking really bad for Alaric, thanks to psycho doc). Sheriff Forbes thinks he killed both men to defend Dr. Fell’s honor (WHAT??????).

Flashback to 1912, Damon and Stefan are in a big tent watching Sage boxing a man. She knocks the guy out and then offers $100 to any man that can beat her (this chick kicks major butt). Back in the present, Damon and Stefan wonder is Sage could have been the Founders’ Council killer.

Elena and Matt break into psycho doc’s apartment looking for evidence. Elena finds a secret closet with a box of files inside. They find files on Bill Forbes, the medical examiner, Alaric, an old Gilbert Journal and a letter from the coroner’s office that proves Alaric’s innocence. Suddenly they hear a noise. Uh oh, psycho doc is home so they hide in the closet.  She changes and leaves again (so they think). They open the closet door to leave and surprise! The psycho doc is standing there and she is not a happy camper.

Elena and Matt’s little stunt landed them in Sheriff Forbes office. They try to convince her that they found evidence to clear Alaric’s name. She tells them they have nothing because Dr. Fell gave her the letter from the coroner’s office, proving Alaric had an alibi the night the medical examiner was killed, earlier (what in the world is the psycho doc up to). She tells them that Alaric will be released as soon as the letter is authenticated.

Over at Mystic Grill Stefan, who is trying to stay off of human blood because it controls him, decides to leave. Damon and Rebekah follow him and Damon bites an unsuspecting girl in the parking lot. Stefan stops him, and the smell of the blood is wearing him down. Damon, who wants to teach Stefan self control, tells him to drink or he will let Rebekah have her way with her, which is a death sentence. Stefan gives in to his bloodlust and drinks from her. Damon tells Rebekah to scram because “Nobody likes a lurker!” (OMG! Damon has the funniest one-liners. This was classic snarky Damon and I loved it). Damon takes the woman away from Stefan to heal her just as Elena and Matt approach. Elena is shocked seeing Stefan with a mouth covered in blood and Stefan is not happy she saw it. Damon is like relax, it is not what it looks like, but Elena gives Stefan an evil glare as Matt takes her away.

Back at the Salvatore house, Damon comes in and tells Stefan that Alaric is free. He then tells him that he did really well with the woman, and before he knows it he’ll be the king of moderation. Flashback to 1912 and we see Damon persuading Stefan to drink human blood again. They go to “have a drink” together, and Stefan ends up killing Mariana Lockwood and snaps her head off. This was the beginning of Stefan “The Ripper”. That is why Damon wants to help him now.

In the family archives, Stefan finds a confession for the murders from Samantha Gilbert (who the authorities thought was crazy) in 1922. Damon is confused by this because he’s pretty sure he had killed her by then. But since she had Jonathon Gilbert’s ring (that prevents someone from being killed by supernatural forces), they decide it is possible.

At the Gilbert house, psycho doc shows up and tells Alaric that she forged the coroner’s note so Sheriff Forbes would release him. She wants to explain everything to him if he lets her in the house(of course at this time I am yelling “Don’t trust her” to my television). Elena is up in her room reading Samantha Gilbert’s journal (Matt swiped it from box in psycho doc’s closet) where she admits that she didn’t feel like herself, and she was losing her mind. Meredith tells Alaric that she thinks his ring is influencing him and he could be doing things he doesn’t remember. Samantha Gilbert possibly had the same ring. How could a ring that allows you to cheat death not have an effect on you? Elena comes in with the journal and says she thinks Meredith is right. Flashback to 1912, we see Samantha Gilbert killing Zachariah Salvatore! Aah! Does that mean Alaric is the killer now?

Holy Salvatore! This episode was well worth the wait and a lot was revealed. I must say I missed seeing Klaus. What did you think of the episode? Do you think Alaric is really the killer? Do you think Damon will be successful at teaching Stefan moderation? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.
