Do You Remember? The Nine Lives of Chloe King and Jane by Design

By  |

Back in the early 2010’s, when the cable network now known as Freeform was still known as ABC Family, there were two dramas – that were very different from each other – that debuted on that network: one season apart.

Those two dramas also have connections to current programming on the Hallmark Channel as well as two very popular ABC dramas: one that just recently ended and the other that will be returning for the start of its 8th season next month.

First of all, those two ABC Family dramas are The Nine Lives of Chloe King and Jane by Design.

The Nine Lives of Chloe King debuted on June 14, 2011 and was based on the young adult books by Elizabeth J. Braswell (published under the pen name Celia Thomson). The supernatural drama followed Chloe King, a girl who discovered that she was a descendant of an ancient race of Bastet offspring called the Mai. As she attempted to learn more about her cat-like powers with her friends and protectors, she also assumed the role of the “Uniter,” a warrior that can stop the war between Mai and humans. Chloe was bestowed with nine lives and had to strive to stay alive while dealing with her love life and the mysteries behind her missing father.

Hallmark star Skyler Samuels – who took over the role of Aurora Teagarden, at least the younger version of that character, from Candace Cameron Bure, who jumped ship for Great American Family – starred as Chloe King in her first big TV role.

The rest of the main cast included Benjamin Stone, Amy Pietz (best known for Caroline in the City), Grace Phipps [now known professionally as Gracie Gillam] (Z Nation and the Teen Beach movies), Ki Hong Lee (who went on to appear in the Maze Runner film franchise), Alyssa Diaz (who is one of the series regulars on The Rookie, which will return for season 8 on ABC in early January) and Grey Damon (best known for his role in Station 19).

Some of the recurring actors in the show included Alicia Coppola (Why Women Kill and Shameless), David S. Lee (Nikita and the box office movies Geostorm and Black Panther), Cristian de la Fuente (In Plain Sight and Private Practice and Daniel Sharman (Teen Wolf).

Some of the more notable guest stars in the show included the late British actress Samantha Eggar (who appeared in the original 1967 box office movie Doctor Dolittle), Floriana Lima (Supergirl and A Million Little Things) and Colton Haynes (Arrow and Teen Wolf).

The show received mostly positive reviews but never got any higher in the ratings than 2 million viewers during its one season, 10-episode run. The show was cancelled on August 16, 2011.

As for Jane by Design, the comedy-drama debuted on January 3, 2012, and followed the life of Jane Quimby (newcomer, at the time, Erica Dasher), a teenager who was mistaken for an adult, as she finally got her fashion dream job working with a world-famous designer, Gray Chandler Murray (the one and only Andie MacDowell, one of the lead stars in the Hallmark Channel series The Way Home). Jane then had to juggle between two secret lives: one in high school and one in high fashion.

The main cast included Nick Roux, Rowly Dennis, David Clayton Rogers (Nashville, Mayans M.C. and Blindspot), India de Beaufort (Younger and the reboot of Night Court), Meagan Tandy (Teen Wolf and Batwoman) and Matthew Atkinson (The Bold and the Beautiful).

Some of the recurring cast included Ser’Darius Blain (the Jumanji movie franchise), Christopher B. Duncan (Veronica Mars), Oded Fehr (the Mummy movie franchise) and Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives).

The guest stars of the show included Jon Brotherton (Hallmark alum and Fuller House), Autumn Reeser (another Hallmark alum and The O.C.) and Parker Young (yet another Hallmark alum, Enlisted and Arrow) as well as a number of fashion icons like Paulina Porizkova, Betsey Johnson, Nina Garcia and Christian Siriano, all appearing as themselves.

The show, unfortunately, received mixed critical reviews and never really even cracked 2 million viewers in its overall average over the course of the 18 episodes that aired. The show came to an end on July 31, 2012.
